Peugeot 208 Indicators: Orange Warnings
Every orange warning light on the Peugeot 208 dashboard explained, from AdBlue and particle filter to TPMS, with what to do for each one.
Orange (amber) warning lamps on a Peugeot 208 rarely mean you have to stop immediately, but they shouldn't be ignored. Most tell you that a system has developed a fault, has switched itself off or needs some attention from you. This guide explains each amber lamp on the second-generation 208 and e-208 (2019 on) and, crucially, how urgent it is. We've based it on the official Peugeot 208 owner's handbook.
Petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and electric 208s share most symbols, but a few (such as the traction battery and charging warnings) only appear on the e-208.
The warnings are grouped by urgency, starting with the ones that need a workshop soonest.

Service Warning
![]()
The Service lamp (a spanner or exclamation mark, depending on the model) is a catch-all for faults that don't have their own dedicated lamp. The message that comes with it is the key.
Scroll the table sideways.
| How it looks | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Comes on briefly with a message | One or more minor faults | Read the message. Some you can fix yourself, such as a flat key fob battery; others, such as a tyre pressure system fault, need a workshop |
| Stays on with a message | One or more major faults | Read the message and have the car checked soon |
| Stays on, with "Audible Warning System fault" | The warning chime system has failed | Driving aids such as Active Safety Brake, lane keeping and road sign recognition may not work. Have it checked |
| Lamp on, spanner flashing then steady | Service overdue | Book a service as soon as possible |
Pedestrian Horn
![]()
Hybrid and electric Peugeots make an artificial sound at low speed so that pedestrians can hear them coming. This lamp means that system has a fault, so people may not hear the car approaching.
What to do:
- Take extra care in car parks, towns and around cyclists and pedestrians
- Have the system repaired soon. It's a legal requirement on new electrified cars in the UK, EU and US
Engine Self-Diagnostic System (Petrol or Diesel)
![]()
The orange engine symbol is what most people call the "check engine light". How it behaves tells you how urgent it is:
Scroll the table sideways.
| How it looks | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Flashing | Engine management fault, such as a misfire, with a risk of destroying the catalytic converter | Reduce speed and have the car checked by a dealer immediately. Avoid heavy acceleration |
| Steady | Emissions control system fault | Have it checked without delay. It should go out once the engine starts if the fault clears |
A steady light is not an emergency, but it is something you shouldn't ignore. Some faults affect fuel economy, and in the UK a car with an illuminated engine light fails its MOT.
SCR Emissions Control System (BlueHDi)
![]()
The SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system uses AdBlue to cut NOx emissions from BlueHDi diesels. The handbook describes three stages:
- Lamp on with a chime and message at start-up: a malfunction has been detected. The alert clears once emissions return to normal
- AdBlue lamp flashing, engine lamp steady, with range shown: a fault is confirmed. You can drive up to about 685 miles (1,100 km), depending on the message, before the car blocks restarting. Book it in now
- Same lamps, "starting prevented" message: the driving limit has been used up and the engine won't restart. Call a dealer or Peugeot Assistance
Electric Parking Brake Malfunction (With Electric Parking Brake)
![]()
Shown with the message "Parking brake fault", this means part of the electric parking brake isn't working properly.
- If the switch isn't responding: the automatic apply/release functions take over and are reactivated automatically, so use them and have the switch repaired
- If the brake itself is faulty: to hold the car when stationary, pull and hold the switch for about 7-15 seconds until the lamp lights. If that doesn't work, park on level ground, engage a gear (manual) or select P (automatic) and chock a wheel
Either way, contact a Peugeot dealer or workshop.
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
![]()
If the ABS lamp stays on, the anti-lock system has a fault. You still have normal brakes, but the wheels can lock under hard braking, especially in the wet.
What to do:
- Drive carefully at moderate speeds and leave extra distance
- Have it checked soon
- If the red brake lamp comes on as well, stop: that combination can mean an EBFD fault
Power Steering
![]()
A steady amber power steering lamp means a minor fault has been detected. The steering may feel heavier than usual.
What to do: drive carefully at moderate speed and have it checked by a dealer or workshop.
Emergency Brake Malfunction (With Electric Parking Brake)
![]()
With the message "Parking brake fault", this warning means the electric parking brake's emergency braking function (used if you hold the switch while moving) won't work at full performance.
What to do:
- If automatic release isn't available, release the brake manually using the switch
- Have the system checked by a dealer or workshop
Hill Start Assist
![]()
Shown with the message "Anti roll-back system fault", this means hill start assist isn't working. The car may roll back briefly when you move off on a slope.
What to do:
- Use the handbrake or parking brake for hill starts until it's fixed
- Have it checked by a dealer or workshop
Lane Positioning Assist
![]()
When this lamp comes on with the Service lamp, the lane positioning assist system, which keeps the car in your chosen position within the lane, has a fault. Keep both hands on the wheel and have the system checked.
Airbags
![]()
A steady airbag lamp means one of the airbags or seat belt pretensioners has a fault. In a crash, it might not deploy.
What to do:
- Have the car checked by a dealer or workshop as soon as possible
- Until then, avoid fitting a child seat in the front passenger seat
In the UK, an illuminated airbag warning lamp is also an MOT failure.
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System Fault
![]()
If the tyre pressure lamp flashes and then stays on, and the Service lamp is also lit, the tyre pressure monitoring system itself has failed. The car can no longer warn you about low tyre pressures.
What to do:
- Check your tyre pressures manually with a gauge
- Have the system repaired
Automatic Main Beam Fault
![]()
With a chime and message, this means the automatic main beam function or its windscreen camera has a fault. Dip your headlights manually for oncoming traffic and contact a Peugeot dealer or workshop.
Particle Filter (Diesel)
![]()
Diesel particulate filters trap soot and burn it off periodically, which needs a decent run at speed. Lots of short journeys can stop that happening.
Scroll the table sideways.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Risk of particle filter blockage | Filter nearly full | When traffic allows, drive at 37 mph (60 km/h) or more with the engine above 2,500 rpm until the lamp goes out |
| Additive level too low | Additive tank low (on models that use it) | Have it topped up at a dealer without delay |
A dual carriageway or motorway run of 15-20 minutes usually does the job. Stick to the speed limit.
Low Fuel Level (Petrol or Diesel)
![]()
When the low-fuel warning first appears, there are only a few litres left in the tank: around 5-6 litres depending on the model (check your handbook for your car's reserve). Until you refuel, the warning comes back every time you switch on the ignition, and more often as the level falls.
What to do:
- Fill up at the next opportunity
- Don't run the tank dry. Peugeot warns this can damage the emissions control and fuel injection systems
Low Traction Battery Charge (Electric)
![]()
On electric models, this lamp and chime mean the traction battery's charge is low.
What to do:
- Check the remaining range on the instrument panel
- Head for a charger as soon as possible. Apps such as Zapmap (UK) or PlugShare can help you find the nearest one
- Cut energy use where you can: ease off your speed and use less heating or air-conditioning
Turtle Mode (Limited Driving Range) (Electric)
![]()
The tortoise (turtle) symbol on an electric Peugeot means the battery is critically low. Motor power is gradually reduced to stretch the remaining charge as far as possible.
What to do:
- Charge immediately. If you can't reach a charger, stop somewhere safe before the car stops itself
- If the lamp stays on after charging, contact a dealer
AdBlue® (BlueHDi)
![]()
BlueHDi diesels need AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF, in the US) to meet emissions rules. The warning gets more insistent as the remaining range falls:
Scroll the table sideways.
| How it looks | Range left | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| On for about 30 seconds at start-up, with range shown | 1,500-500 miles (2,400-800 km) | Top up soon |
| Steady at start-up, with a chime | 500-62 miles (800-100 km) | Top up promptly |
| Flashing, with a chime | Less than 62 miles (100 km) | Top up now, or the car won't restart |
| Flashing, "starting prevented" message | Tank empty | The engine immobiliser is active. Add at least 10 litres of AdBlue to restart |
You can buy AdBlue at most filling stations and motor factors. Only use fluid meeting ISO 22241.
Tyre Under-Inflation
![]()
A steady tyre symbol means the pressure in one or more tyres is too low, often because of a slow puncture or because of a drop in temperature.
What to do:
- Check all four tyres with a gauge as soon as possible (when the tyres are cold)
- Inflate them to the pressures on the label in the driver's door frame
- Reinitialise the system afterwards through the touch screen or vehicle settings, otherwise the warning will come back
If a tyre keeps losing air, have it checked for a puncture.
Engine Pre-Heating (Diesel)
![]()
On diesel models, this coil-shaped lamp lights up when you switch on the ignition in cold weather while the glow plugs warm the engine. It can stay on for up to about 30 seconds in very cold conditions.
What to do:
- Wait for the lamp to go out before starting
- Then keep the clutch (manual) or brake (automatic) pressed and the engine will start straight away
- If it doesn't start, make another start request with your foot still on the pedal
Automatic Functions Deactivated (Electric Parking Brake)
![]()
This lamp means the electric parking brake's automatic functions (applying when you switch off and releasing when you pull away) are deactivated. You'll need to apply and release the brake yourself using the switch.
To reactivate the automatic functions (procedure from the handbook):
- Start the engine and apply the parking brake with the switch
- Take your foot fully off the brake pedal
- Push the switch in the release direction and hold it for 10-15 seconds, then let go
- Press and hold the brake pedal, pull the switch in the apply direction for 2 seconds, then let go of both
Collision Risk Alert/Active Safety Brake
![]()
Scroll the table sideways.
| How it looks | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Flashing | The system is braking the car to avoid or reduce a collision | Nothing; brake firmly yourself if needed |
| Steady, with a message | System switched off via the touch screen | Switch it back on in the settings if you want it |
| Steady, with a message and chime | System fault | Have it checked |
| Steady, "Driving Assistance Sensor blind" | Camera is obstructed | Stop when safe, switch off and clean the windscreen in front of the camera |
| Steady (on its own) | Temporarily off because a front occupant's belt isn't fastened | Fasten the seat belt |
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)/Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)
![]()
Scroll the table sideways.
| How it looks | What it means |
|---|---|
| Flashing while driving | DSC/ASR is working to stop wheelspin or a skid. Ease off and drive to the conditions |
| Steady after you switched it off | The system is deactivated. It switches back on at the next restart and above about 31 mph (50 km/h); below that speed you can reactivate it manually |
| Steady without being switched off | System fault. Have it checked |
Turning DSC off can help you move off in deep snow or mud, but switch it back on as soon as you're moving again.
Lane Keeping Assist
![]()
Scroll the table sideways.
| How it looks | What it means |
|---|---|
| Flashing | You're drifting over a broken lane line without indicating. The system corrects your steering if it detects a risk |
| Steady | The system has switched itself off or is on standby, often because the lines are faded or the camera can't see them |
| Steady, "Driving Assistance Sensor blind" | The camera is obstructed. Stop when safe and clean the windscreen in front of it |
Using your indicators when you change lanes stops the system intervening.
Front Passenger Airbag (ON)
![]()
This lamp confirms that the front passenger airbag is active (the switch is set to ON). It's the right setting for adult passengers.
Important: never fit a rear-facing child seat in the front passenger seat while the airbag is on. If the airbag deployed, it could seriously injure or kill the child.
Front Passenger Airbag (OFF)
![]()
This lamp confirms the front passenger airbag is deactivated (the switch is set to OFF). It's the setting you need for a rear-facing child seat in the front.
Remember to switch it back to ON before an adult sits there. If the main airbag fault lamp is also on, don't fit a child seat in the front until the fault has been fixed.
Parking Sensors
![]()
- Flashing: an obstacle has been detected. Manoeuvre carefully
- Steady, with a message and chime: system fault. Have it checked
- "Parking Assistance Sensor blind": the sensors are covered in dirt, snow or ice. Stop when safe, switch off and clean the front and/or rear bumper sensors
Stop & Start (Petrol or Diesel)
![]()
Scroll the table sideways.
| How it looks | What it means |
|---|---|
| Steady, with a message | You've switched Stop & Start off manually |
| Steady | The system has switched itself off, for example below 0 °C or above 35 °C outside |
| Flashing, then steady, with a message | System fault. Have it checked |
When the system is off, the engine won't stop at the next standstill. That's normal and not a problem in itself.
Rear Foglamps
![]()
Your rear fog lamp is on. In the UK, the Highway Code says to use fog lamps only when visibility is seriously reduced, generally to less than 100 metres (328 feet). Switch them off when visibility improves, because they can dazzle drivers behind you and hide your brake lights.
If You're Not Sure
- Read the message. The text that appears with a lamp on the 208's display usually tells you exactly which system is affected
- Note what else is lit. Several warnings change meaning when they appear together with STOP or Service
- Photograph the dashboard before you switch off. It helps the dealer or your breakdown service diagnose the fault
- When in doubt, stop safely and call for help. It costs far less than a damaged engine or a collision
