Orange warning lamps on your Peugeot 208 either warn you about a malfunction or show the status of a system, such as a driving aid that has been switched off. If one comes on, there may be a fault that needs further investigation. Some lamps also light up for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and should go off as soon as the engine has started.

This guide covers the second-generation Peugeot 208 (208 II) from 2023 to 2025. It is based on handbook edition ed01-23, which applies to cars produced from 1 November 2023. Not every lamp appears on every car, because some depend on the version or equipment fitted.

Service

Service warning lamp iconService warning lamp icon

This is the Service warning lamp. It comes on temporarily or stays on, usually with a message on the instrument panel, and it warns of faults that have no warning lamp of their own. When it appears with the service spanner, it means the servicing interval has been exceeded.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on temporarily with a message, one or more minor faults have been detected:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find out what the fault is.
  • You may be able to deal with some faults yourself, such as changing the battery in the remote control.
  • For other faults, such as a problem with the tyre under-inflation detection system, go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on with a message, one or more major faults have been detected:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find out what the fault is.
  • Then go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on with the message “Audible Warning System fault: Repair needed”, the audible warning system has failed:

  • Road signs recognition, Active Safety Brake/Collision Risk Alert, Lane keeping assist and Driver Attention Warning by Camera may be disturbed or unavailable.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the Service lamp stays on and the service spanner flashes and then stays on, the servicing interval has been exceeded. This applies only to BlueHDi Diesel engines:

  • Have your car serviced as soon as possible.

Engine self-diagnostics system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel)

Engine self-diagnostics system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel) warning lamp iconEngine self-diagnostics system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel) warning lamp icon

This warning shows the engine self-diagnostics lamp together with the Service warning lamp. When both stay on, a minor engine fault has been detected.

What to do:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine preheating (Diesel)

Engine preheating (Diesel) warning lamp icon

This is the engine preheating lamp on Diesel models. When you switch on the ignition, it comes on temporarily if the weather and the engine temperature make it necessary. In severe weather it can stay on for up to approximately 30 seconds.

What to do:

  • Wait until the lamp goes off before starting the engine.
  • Once it is off, the engine will start straight away if you press and hold the clutch pedal (manual gearbox) or the brake pedal (automatic gearbox).
  • If the engine does not start, make the starting request again while keeping your foot on the pedal.

Particle filter (Diesel)

Particle filter (Diesel) warning lamp icon

This is the particle filter lamp on Diesel models. It stays on with an audible signal and a message. The message tells you whether the filter is nearing saturation or the additive level is too low.

What to do:

If the message warns of a risk of particle filter blockage, the filter is nearing saturation:

  • As soon as traffic conditions allow, regenerate the filter by driving at a speed of at least 37 mph (60 km/h) with the engine speed above 2,500 rpm.
  • Keep driving this way until the lamp goes off.

If the message says the additive level in the particle filter is too low, the additive tank has reached its low level:

  • Have the additive topped up without delay at a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Tortoise mode with limited driving range (Electric)

Tortoise mode with limited driving range (Electric) warning lamp icon

This is the tortoise mode lamp on electric models. When it stays on, the state of charge of the traction battery is critical and the engine power gradually decreases.

What to do:

  • Put the car on charge.
  • If the lamp stays on, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine self-diagnostic system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel)

Engine self-diagnostic system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel) warning lamp icon

This is the engine self-diagnostic lamp on its own. It can either flash or stay on, and each points to a different fault.

What to do:

If the lamp flashes, the engine management system has a fault:

  • There is a risk that the catalytic converter will be destroyed.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on, the emissions control system has a fault:

  • The lamp should go off when the engine is started.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

AdBlue® (BlueHDi)

AdBlue® (BlueHDi) warning lamp icon

This is the AdBlue® lamp on BlueHDi models. The way it lights up, and the message shown with it, tell you how much driving range is left or whether the engine is already prevented from starting.

What to do:

If it comes on for around 30 seconds when you start the car, with a message showing a driving range between 1,500 and 500 miles (2,400 and 800 km):

  • Top up the AdBlue®.

If it stays on when you switch on the ignition, with an audible signal and a message showing a driving range between 500 and 62 miles (800 and 100 km):

  • Top up the AdBlue® promptly, or go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it flashes with an audible signal and a message showing a driving range of less than 62 miles (100 km):

  • You must top up the AdBlue® to avoid the engine being prevented from starting, or go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it flashes with an audible signal and a message saying starting is prevented, the AdBlue® tank is empty and the legally required engine immobiliser stops the engine from starting:

  • To restart the engine, top up the AdBlue® or contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
  • You must add at least 10 litres of AdBlue® to the tank.

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi)

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi) warning lamp iconSCR emissions control system (BlueHDi) warning lamp icon

This warning uses the AdBlue® lamp and the engine self-diagnostics lamp together on BlueHDi models. It relates to a malfunction of the SCR emissions control system. Depending on how the lamps behave, the engine may soon be prevented from starting, or may already be prevented.

What to do:

If both lamps stay on when you switch on the ignition, with an audible signal and a message, a malfunction of the SCR emissions control system has been detected:

  • The alert disappears once the exhaust emissions return to normal levels.

If the AdBlue® lamp flashes and the engine self-diagnostics lamp stays on when you switch on the ignition, with an audible signal and a message showing the driving range:

  • Depending on the message, you can drive for up to 685 miles (1,100 km) before the engine immobiliser is triggered.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay so that starting is not prevented.

If the AdBlue® lamp flashes and the engine self-diagnostics lamp stays on when you switch on the ignition, with an audible signal and a message saying starting is prevented:

  • The engine immobiliser stops the engine from restarting, because the permitted driving limit has been exceeded after a malfunction of the emissions control system was confirmed.
  • To start the engine, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Automatic functions deactivated (electric parking brake)

Automatic functions deactivated (electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

This is the electric parking brake automatic functions lamp. When it stays on, automatic application (when you switch off the engine) and automatic release (when you accelerate) are deactivated.

What to do:

If automatic application and release are no longer possible, follow these steps:

  • Start the engine, apply the electric parking brake using its control, then take your foot fully off the brake pedal.
  • Hold the control pressed in the release direction for between 10 and 15 seconds, then let go of it.
  • Press and hold the brake pedal, pull the control in the application direction for 2 seconds, then let go of both the control and the brake pedal.

Malfunction (with electric parking brake)

Malfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp iconMalfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp iconMalfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

This warning lamp stays on together with the Service warning lamp and the message “Parking brake fault”. In the more serious case, the automatic functions lamp is also on.

What to do:

If the lamp stays on with the Service warning lamp only, the vehicle cannot be immobilised with the engine running:

  • If the manual application and release commands do not work, the electric parking brake control is faulty.
  • Use the automatic functions at all times. They are reactivated automatically if the control is faulty.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the automatic functions lamp is also on, the electric parking brake is faulty and the manual and automatic functions may not be working:

  • When stationary, pull the electric parking brake control and hold it for approximately 7 to 15 seconds, until the indicator lamp lights up on the instrument panel.
  • If that does not work, secure the car: park on a level surface and, with a manual gearbox, engage a gear. With an automatic gearbox or drive selector, select mode P, then place the supplied chock against one of the wheels.
  • Then contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
