Orange warning lamps on your Peugeot 208 point to a fault that needs looking into, or tell you about the status of a system. Some come on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and should go off once the engine starts. If one comes on while the engine is running or you are driving, check any message shown and read the description below.

This guide covers the Peugeot 208 I (2015-present) and is based on handbook edition ed01-18, which applies to vehicles produced from 06/08/2018. Some lamps depend on your car's version or equipment, so you may not see all of them.

Service

Service warning lamp icon

This is the Service warning lamp. If it comes on for a short time with a message, one or more minor faults have been detected that have no warning lamp of their own. If it stays on with a message, one or more major faults have been detected that have no warning lamp of their own.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on briefly with a message:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find out what the fault is.
  • You can sort out some problems yourself, such as a door left open or the particle filter starting to clog.
  • For anything else, such as a fault with the tyre under-inflation detection system, contact a qualified professional.

If the lamp stays on with a message:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find out what the fault is.
  • Then contact a qualified professional.

Diesel engine pre-heating

Diesel engine pre-heating warning lamp icon

This is the diesel pre-heating lamp. It comes on for a short time when you switch on the ignition if the weather and engine temperature mean the engine needs pre-heating.

What to do:

  • Wait for the lamp to go off before you start the engine.
  • If the engine does not start, switch the ignition off and on again.
  • Wait for the lamp to go off again, then start the engine.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning lamp icon

This is the ABS warning lamp. If it stays on, there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

What to do:

  • Your car still has conventional braking.
  • Drive carefully at a moderate speed.
  • Contact a qualified professional.

Dynamic stability control /Anti-slip regulation (DSC)

Dynamic stability control /Anti-slip regulation (DSC) warning lamp icon

This is the DSC/ASR lamp. If it flashes, the system is working to correct a loss of grip or a change in the car's path. If it stays on, there is a fault with the DSC/ASR system.

What to do:

If the lamp is flashing:

  • The handbook gives no specific action for this case. The lamp shows the system is stepping in.

If the lamp stays on:

  • Contact a qualified professional.

Airbags

Airbags warning lamp icon

This is the airbag warning lamp. If it stays on, one of the airbags or seat belt pretensioners has a fault.

What to do:

  • Contact a qualified professional.

Front passenger airbag(OFF)

Front passenger airbag(OFF) warning lamp icon

This is the front passenger airbag OFF lamp. If it stays on, the front passenger airbag is switched off because its control is set to "OFF".

What to do:

  • You can fit a rearward-facing child seat in the front passenger seat.
  • Do not do this if the airbag warning lamp is on, as that means there is an airbag fault.

Engine self-diagnosis system

Engine self-diagnosis system warning lamp icon

This is the engine self-diagnosis lamp. If it flashes, the engine management system has a fault. If it stays on, the emission control system has a fault.

What to do:

If the lamp is flashing:

  • There is a risk of damaging the catalytic converter beyond repair.
  • Make sure you contact a qualified professional.

If the lamp stays on:

  • The lamp should go off when the engine is started.
  • Contact a qualified professional quickly.

Engine diagnostic system

Engine diagnostic system warning lamp iconEngine diagnostic system warning lamp icon

This lamp can appear as either of two engine diagnostic icons. If it stays on, a minor engine fault has been detected.

What to do:

  • Contact a qualified professional.

AdBlue® (with 1.6 BlueHDi Euro 6.1)

AdBlue® (with 1.6 BlueHDi Euro 6.1) warning lamp icon

This is the AdBlue® warning lamp. If it stays on when you switch on the ignition, with a beep and a message showing the remaining range, you have between 1,500 and 500 miles (2,400 and 600 km) left.

What to do:

  • Top up the AdBlue® as soon as possible.
  • Alternatively, contact a qualified professional.

AdBlue® (with 1.5 litre BlueHDi Euro 6.2)

AdBlue® (with 1.5 litre BlueHDi Euro 6.2) warning lamp icon

This is the AdBlue® warning lamp, and how it lights up shows how much range you have left. It works in four stages, from a reminder to top up through to the engine being prevented from starting.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on for around 30 seconds when you start the car, with a message showing between 1,500 and 500 miles (2,400 and 800 km) of range:

  • Top up the AdBlue®.

If the lamp stays on when you switch on the ignition, with a beep and a message showing between 500 and 60 miles (800 and 100 km) of range:

  • Top up the AdBlue® as soon as possible.
  • Alternatively, contact a qualified professional.

If the lamp flashes, with a beep and a message showing less than 60 miles (100 km) of range:

  • You must top up the AdBlue® to stop the engine being prevented from starting.
  • Alternatively, contact a qualified professional.

If the lamp flashes, with a beep and a message saying starting is prevented:

  • The AdBlue® tank is empty, and the legally required system is stopping the engine from starting.
  • To restart the engine, top up the AdBlue® or contact a qualified professional.
  • You must add at least 5 litres of AdBlue® to the tank.

SCR emissions control system

SCR emissions control system warning lamp iconSCR emissions control system warning lamp iconSCR emissions control system warning lamp icon

This alert uses the AdBlue®, Service and engine self-diagnosis lamps together, with a beep and a message. It means a fault has been detected with the SCR emissions control system, and how the lamps behave shows how serious it is.

What to do:

If all three lamps stay on when you switch on the ignition, with a message:

  • A fault with the SCR system has been detected.
  • The alert goes away once exhaust emissions are back to normal levels.

If the AdBlue® lamp flashes and the Service and engine self-diagnosis lamps stay on, with a message showing the remaining range:

  • Depending on the message, you can drive for up to 685 miles (1,100 km) before the engine is prevented from starting.
  • Contact a qualified professional as soon as possible to avoid this.

If the AdBlue® lamp flashes and the Service and engine self-diagnosis lamps stay on, with a message saying the engine cannot restart:

  • The authorised driving limit has been passed after a confirmed emissions fault, so an immobiliser stops the engine from restarting.
  • To start the engine, contact a qualified professional.

Rear foglamp

Rear foglamp warning lamp icon

This is the rear foglamp indicator. When it stays on, your rear foglamp is on.

What to do:

  • The handbook gives no specific action. The lamp simply confirms the rear foglamp is on.

If You're Not Sure

If you are not sure what an orange lamp means, check any message shown on the instrument panel and compare it with the description above. If you still have doubts, or the handbook tells you to, contact a qualified professional.

Orange lamps are your Peugeot 208's way of telling you something needs attention. Read the message, follow the steps above, and you will know whether you can deal with it yourself or need a qualified professional.
