Peugeot 206 SW Indicators: Orange Warnings (2004)

Orange warning lights on the Peugeot 206 SW (2004) explained: ABS, ESP/ASR, engine diagnostics, pre-heat, low fuel, air bags and what to do for each.

Orange warning lamps on your Peugeot 206 SW tell you about a fault or the status of a system that needs your attention. Some only ask you to wait or be aware, while others mean you should have the car looked at by a PEUGEOT dealer.

This guide covers the Peugeot 206 SW based on handbook edition ed01-04, valid for vehicles produced from 01/04/2004. Some lamps are only fitted depending on the model, version, equipment or country, so your instrument panel may not show all of them.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Warning Light

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Warning Light warning lamp icon

This lamp shows the ABS symbol. It comes on for several seconds every time you switch on the ignition. If it stays on, or comes on when you are driving above 8 mph (12 km/h), there is a fault in the ABS. The same applies if it lights up together with an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display. Your car still has conventional servo-assisted braking.

What to do:

  • Remember that the ABS is not working, but conventional servo-assisted braking still is.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Dynamic Stability Control (ESP/ASR) Warning Light

This lamp shows the ESP/ASR symbol. It comes on for a few seconds each time you switch on the ignition. With the engine running and the car moving, it comes on when the system is activated. It stays lit permanently when you have disarmed the system.

What to do:

If the lamp stays lit with the engine running and the car moving:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Engine Diagnostics Warning Light

Engine Diagnostics Warning Light warning lamp icon

This lamp shows the engine diagnostics symbol and is fitted according to model. It comes on for a few seconds each time you switch on the ignition. If it comes on with the engine running, the injection, ignition or emission control system is not working correctly. If it flashes, there is a risk of damage to the catalytic converter on petrol engines. On Diesel engines, an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display warn you that the particle emission filter (PEF) is starting to clog, which can happen after exceptionally long spells of urban driving such as low speeds and long traffic jams.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on steadily with the engine running:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If the lamp flashes:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If you get the particle filter warning on a Diesel:

  • As soon as traffic allows, drive at 40 mph (60 km/h) or above for at least five minutes, until the message disappears, so the filter can regenerate.
  • If the warning persists, consult a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.

Diesel Engine Pre-heat Warning Light

This lamp shows the Diesel pre-heat symbol. It comes on when you switch on the ignition on a Diesel engine. If the temperature is already high enough, it only lights up for less than one second.

What to do:

If the lamp stays on after you switch on the ignition:

  • Wait until the lamp goes out before starting the engine.

If the lamp comes on for less than one second:

  • You can start the engine straight away without waiting.

Low Fuel Level Warning Light

This lamp shows the fuel pump symbol. When it first comes on, you still have enough fuel to drive at least 30 miles (50 km).

What to do:

  • Keep in mind that when the lamp first comes on, you have enough fuel for at least 30 miles (50 km).
  • The fuel tank holds approximately 50 litres.

Water in Diesel Filter Indicator

This lamp shows the Diesel filter symbol and is fitted according to country. If it comes on together with an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display, there is a risk of damage to the injection system.

What to do:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.

Passenger Air Bag Disarmed Warning Light

This lamp shows the passenger air bag symbol and is fitted according to country. When it lights up together with a message on the multi-function display, the passenger air bag is disarmed. It stays lit for as long as the passenger air bag remains disarmed.

What to do:

If the lamp is lit steadily:

  • This tells you the passenger air bag is disarmed, and the lamp stays on for as long as it remains so.

If the lamp flashes:

  • Always consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Air Bags Warning Light

This lamp shows the air bag symbol. It comes on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition. If it lights up with the engine running, together with an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display, there is a fault in the air bags.

What to do:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If You're Not Sure

If you are not sure what a lamp is telling you, stay calm, stop somewhere safe when you can and check the message on the multi-function display. If you still have doubts, consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Orange lamps on your Peugeot 206 SW are there to warn you early, so take note of them and act on the advice above. Knowing what each one means makes it much easier to deal with them calmly when they appear.
