Central STOP Warning Light

This is the lamp marked STOP in the centre of the instrument panel. It works together with the engine oil pressure and temperature, low coolant level, handbrake, low brake fluid level and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) fault warning lights, and with the coolant temperature gauge. If it flashes while the engine is running, you must stop. It also flashes when the coolant temperature gauge shows that the temperature is too high.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Check which other warning light has come on with it, or whether the coolant temperature gauge is showing too high.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Engine Oil Pressure and Temperature Warning Light

This red lamp warns you about the engine oil, and it works together with the central STOP warning light. You will also hear an audible signal. It can mean that the oil pressure is too low, that there is not enough oil in the lubrication circuit, or that the oil temperature is too high. The engine oil temperature gauge also shows when the oil temperature is too high.

What to do:

If the oil pressure is too low or there is not enough oil:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Top up the engine oil to the correct level.

If the oil temperature is too high:

  • Reduce your speed to bring the oil temperature down.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Diesel Engine Low Coolant Level Warning Light

This red lamp warns that the coolant level is too low on diesel engines. It works together with the central STOP warning light, and when it comes on you must stop. The cooling circuit is under pressure, so take care before you open it.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so, and wait for the engine to cool before topping up.
  • To avoid burns, unscrew the coolant cap by two turns and let the pressure drop.
  • Once the pressure has dropped, remove the cap, top up the coolant and consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Handbrake, Low Brake Fluid and EBFD Fault Warning Light

Handbrake, Low Brake Fluid and EBFD Fault Warning Light warning lamp icon

This red lamp covers the handbrake, the brake fluid level and the Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) system, and it works together with the central STOP warning light. It comes on if the handbrake is applied or not fully released. If it stays on after you have released the handbrake, the brake fluid level has dropped too far. If it comes on together with the ABS warning light, there is a fault in the EBFD system.

What to do:

If the handbrake is on:

  • Release the handbrake fully.

If the light stays on with the handbrake released:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If the ABS warning light is on as well:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Battery Charge Warning Light

This red lamp warns you about the battery charging system. It can mean that the charging circuit is not working properly, that the battery or starter terminals are loose, that the alternator belt is broken or slack, or that the alternator has failed.

What to do:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Seat Belt Not Fastened Warning Light

This red lamp reminds you to fasten your seat belt and is fitted depending on the country the car was sold in. It comes on when you switch on the ignition if your seat belt is not fastened, and it stays on until you fasten it. Above 12 mph (20 km/h) it flashes for about two minutes, together with an audible signal that gets louder.

What to do:

If the light is on steadily:

  • Fasten your seat belt.

If the light is flashing and you hear the signal while driving:

  • Fasten your seat belt.

Air Bags Warning Light

This red lamp warns you about the air bags. It comes on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition, which is normal. If it comes on while the engine is running, along with an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display, there is a fault in the air bags.

What to do:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If You're Not Sure

If a red light comes on and you are not sure what it means, stay calm, stop somewhere safe and check whether the central STOP warning light is on as well. If it is, or if you are still unsure, consult a PEUGEOT dealer before you carry on.

Red warning lights on your Peugeot 206 SW are there to protect you and your car, so it pays to act on them quickly. Keep this guide handy, and check your handbook for the exact details of your own car's version and equipment.
