Peugeot 206 SW Indicators: Orange Warnings (2002-2004)

Orange warning lights on the Peugeot 206 SW (2002-2004) explained: what each lamp means, from ABS and ESP to low fuel and air bags, and what to do.

Orange warning lamps on your dashboard usually point to a fault that needs attention, a system that has been switched off, or something you need to do, such as refuelling or waiting before you start the engine. This guide explains what each one means and what you should do when it comes on.

It covers the Peugeot 206 SW (2002-2004) and is based on the handbook edition for vehicles produced from 1 October 2003. Some lamps depend on the version, engine or equipment of your car, and some are only fitted according to destination, so your dashboard may not show all of them.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light warning lamp icon

This is the anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light. It comes on for several seconds each time you switch on the ignition, which is normal. If it stays on, or comes on above 8 mph (12 km/h), there is a fault in the ABS. If it lights up together with an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display, this also indicates an ABS fault. Your car still has conventional servo-assisted braking.

If the ABS light comes on at the same time as the handbrake and brake fluid warning light, this indicates a fault in the Electronic Brake Force Distribution system.

What to do:

If the ABS light is on by itself:

  • Remember that you still have conventional servo-assisted braking.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If the ABS light is on together with the handbrake and brake fluid warning light:

  • Stop the car somewhere safe.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Dynamic stability control system (ESP/ASR) warning light

This is the dynamic stability control system (ESP/ASR) warning light. It comes on for a few seconds each time you switch on the ignition, which is normal. With the engine running and the car moving, it comes on when the system is activated. It stays lit permanently when the system has been disarmed.

What to do:

If the light stays on because you have disarmed the system:

  • Bear in mind that the system is switched off.

If the light stays on with the engine running and the car moving, and you have not disarmed the system:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Engine diagnostics warning light (according to model)

This is the engine diagnostics warning light, fitted according to model. It comes on for a few seconds each time you switch on the ignition, which is normal. If it comes on with the engine running, the injection, ignition or emission control system is not working correctly. If it flashes, there is a risk of damage to the catalytic converter.

What to do:

If the light stays on with the engine running:

  • Be aware that the injection, ignition or emission control system is not working correctly. The handbook gives no separate action for a steady light.

If the light flashes:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Diesel engine pre-heat warning light

This is the diesel engine pre-heat warning light. It tells you when you can start the engine. If the temperature is high enough, it only comes on for less than one second.

What to do:

If the light stays on:

  • Wait until the light goes out before you start the engine.

If the light comes on for less than one second:

  • You can start the engine straight away without waiting.

Low fuel level warning light

This is the low fuel level warning light. When it first comes on, you have enough fuel left to drive approximately 30 miles (50 km). The fuel tank holds approximately 50 litres.

What to do:

  • Refuel at the next opportunity.

This is the passenger air bag disarmed warning light, fitted according to destination. When it comes on together with a message on the multi-function display, the passenger air bag is disarmed. It stays lit for as long as the passenger air bag remains disarmed.

What to do:

If the light stays on:

  • Bear in mind that the passenger air bag is disarmed.

If the light flashes:

  • Always consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Air bags warning light

This is the air bags warning light. It comes on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition, which is normal. If it comes on with the engine running, together with an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display, there is a fault in the air bags.

What to do:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If You're Not Sure

If you're not sure which lamp is lit or what it means, stay calm, stop somewhere safe if you need to and check your car's handbook. If you're still unsure, consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Orange lamps are rarely a reason to panic, but they're worth taking seriously. Get to know what each one means and you'll know straight away whether you can carry on, need to act yourself or should have your Peugeot 206 SW looked at.
