Peugeot 2008 Tyre Pressure and Under-Inflation Detection (2019-2023)

Peugeot 2008 II (2019-2023) tyre under-inflation detection: how it works, what to do when the alert comes on, reinitialising and malfunctions.

Peugeot 2008 II exterior, tyre pressure and under-inflation detection article

Hello and welcome. In this article we look at the tyre under-inflation detection system on the Peugeot 2008 II (2019-2023). We will cover how it works, what to do when the alert comes on, how to reinitialise it, what a malfunction means and where to find the tyre pressure label.

Tyre under-inflation detection

The tyre under-inflation detection system alerts you if one or more tyres lose pressure. It only raises the alert when the car is moving, not when it is stationary.

  • How it works: it compares information from the wheel speed sensors with reference values.
  • Reference values: these must be reinitialised every time you adjust the tyre pressures or change a wheel.
  • Your responsibility: the system uses the last values stored during reinitialisation, so the tyre pressures must be correct when you do it.

The system never replaces your own vigilance as a driver. You still need to check the tyre pressures regularly, including the spare wheel, especially before a long journey. Driving on under-inflated tyres, particularly with a heavy load, at high speed or on a long journey, has these effects:

  • Worse road-holding.
  • Longer braking distances.
  • Premature tyre wear.
  • Higher energy consumption.

You can find the inflation pressures for your car on the tyre pressure label. See the Identification markings section below for where to find it.

Checking tyre pressures: check them monthly when the tyres are "cold", meaning the car has been stopped for 1 hour or has done a journey of less than 6 miles (10 km) at moderate speeds. If the tyres are not cold, add 0.3 bar to the pressures shown on the label.

You do not need to reinitialise the system after fitting or removing snow chains.

Under-inflation alert

The alert is shown by the warning lamp lighting up steadily, together with an audible signal and, depending on equipment, a message.

  1. Slow down: reduce speed immediately, avoid excessive steering movements and avoid sudden braking.
  2. Stop: stop the car as soon as it is safe to do so.
  3. Check all four tyres: using a compressor, such as the one in the temporary puncture repair kit, check the pressures of all four tyres when cold.
  4. If you cannot check straight away: drive carefully at reduced speed.
  5. If you have a puncture: use the temporary puncture repair kit or the spare wheel, depending on equipment.

A loss of pressure does not always cause visible deformation of the tyre, so do not rely on a visual check alone. Keep these points in mind:

  • Driving too slowly may not ensure optimum monitoring.
  • The alert is not immediately triggered after a sudden loss of pressure or a tyre blow-out, because analysing the wheel speed sensor values can take several minutes.
  • The alert may be delayed at speeds below 25 mph (40 km/h), or when you adopt a sporty driving mode.

The alert stays active until you reinitialise the system.

Reinitialisation

You must reinitialise the system after adjusting the pressure of one or more tyres, and after changing one or more wheels.

  1. Check the pressures: check the pressures of all four tyres.
  2. Compare with the label: make sure they are correct for how you are using the car and match the values on the tyre pressure label.
  3. Reinitialise: with the car stationary, reinitialise the system using the Driving/Vehicle menu on the touch screen.

The system does not tell you if a pressure is incorrect when you reinitialise it, so the check beforehand is essential.

Malfunction

If the system develops a fault, the warning lamps light up on the instrument panel and a message appears with an audible signal. Tyre under-inflation monitoring is then no longer carried out, so have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Non-standard or 'space-saver' spare wheel: using this type of spare wheel may suspend tyre pressure monitoring. The malfunction warning lamp comes on and goes off once the wheel has been replaced by one the same size as the others, the pressure has been readjusted and the system has been reinitialised.

Identification markings

Your car carries several visible markings for identification and vehicle search.

MarkingLocationDetails
A. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)Under the bonnetStamped on the chassis
B. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)On the dashboardPrinted on an adhesive label visible through the windscreen
C. Manufacturer's labelRight-hand doorIdentification and weight information
D. Tyres/paint code labelDriver's doorTyre information and paint colour code

The manufacturer's label shows:

  • Manufacturer's name.
  • European whole vehicle type approval number.
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • Gross vehicle weight (GVW).
  • Gross train weight (GTW).
  • Maximum weight on the front axle.
  • Maximum weight on the rear axle.

The tyres/paint code label shows the paint colour code and this tyre information:

  • Tyre pressures, unladen and laden.
  • Tyre specification: dimensions and type, plus the load and speed indices.
  • Spare tyre inflation pressure.

Your car may have been fitted from new with tyres that have higher load and speed indices than those on the label, and this does not affect the tyre pressures (on cold tyres). If you want to change the type of tyres, contact a PEUGEOT dealer for the tyre fits approved for your car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the tyre pressure label on a Peugeot 2008?

The tyres/paint code label is on the driver's door. It shows the tyre pressures unladen and laden, as well as the spare tyre inflation pressure.

How do I reset the tyre pressure warning on my Peugeot 2008?

First check that all four tyres are at the pressures on the tyre pressure label. Then, with the car stationary, reinitialise the system through the Driving/Vehicle menu on the touch screen.

Why did the under-inflation warning not come on straight away after a puncture?

The alert is not triggered immediately after a sudden loss of pressure or a blow-out, because analysing the wheel speed sensor values can take several minutes. It may also be delayed below 25 mph (40 km/h) or in a sporty driving mode.

Do I need to reset the tyre pressure system after fitting snow chains?

No. The system does not need to be reinitialised after fitting or removing snow chains.

The under-inflation detection system is a useful backup, but it does not replace your own monthly pressure checks. Keep the pressures matched to the label on the driver's door, reinitialise the system whenever you adjust them or change a wheel, and your 2008 will be able to warn you properly if a tyre loses pressure.
