Service indicator

The service indicator appears on the instrument panel. Depending on the version, it works in one of two ways:

  • The distance recorder display line shows the distance remaining before the next service, or the distance travelled since the service was due, shown with a "-" sign in front.
  • An alert message shows the distance remaining, and either the time left before the next service or how long it is overdue.

The distance shown, in miles or kilometres, is calculated from the distance covered and the time elapsed since the last service. The alert can also be triggered when a due date is close.

Resetting the service indicator

The service indicator must be reset to zero after each service. If you have serviced the car yourself:

  1. Ignition off: Switch off the ignition.
  2. Hold the button: Press and hold the trip distance recorder reset button.
  3. Ignition on: Switch on the ignition. The distance recorder display starts a countdown.
  4. Release: When the display shows "=0", release the button. The spanner disappears.

If you need to disconnect the battery after this, lock the car and wait at least 5 minutes so the reset is registered.

Retrieving the service information

You can check the service information at any time. Press the trip distance recorder reset button and the information is shown for a few seconds before it disappears.

Coolant temperature gauge

The coolant temperature gauge shows the engine temperature while the engine is running. The needle position tells you:

  • Zone A: The temperature is correct.
  • Zone B: The temperature is too high. The maximum temperature and central STOP warning lamps come on, with an audible signal and a warning message on the screen.

If the needle is in zone B:

  1. Stop: Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  2. Wait: Wait a few minutes before switching off the engine.
  3. Get help: Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

After a few minutes of driving, the temperature and pressure in the cooling system rise. To top up the coolant to the required level:

  1. Cool down: Wait for the engine to cool.
  2. Release pressure: Unscrew the cap slightly so the pressure can drop.
  3. Remove the cap: Once the pressure has dropped, take the cap off.
  4. Top up: Fill to the "MAX" mark.

Take care, as there is a risk of burns when topping up the cooling system. Never fill above the maximum level shown on the reservoir.

Oil level

You can check the engine oil level with the dipstick and, on some versions, with the electronic oil level indicator. The dipstick has 2 marks:

  • A: Maximum. Never go above this level.
  • B: Minimum. Top up through the oil filler cap, using the grade of oil suited to your engine.

To check the level with the dipstick:

  1. Open the bonnet: Open the bonnet and secure it with the stay.
  2. Wipe: Pull the dipstick out and wipe it with a clean cloth.
  3. Read: Put the dipstick back in its tube, then pull it out again and check the level against the marks.
  4. Replace: Put the dipstick back in its tube.

If the oil level is too low:

  1. Find the cap: Locate the engine oil filler cap.
  2. Open: Open the filler cap.
  3. Add oil: Add engine oil without going above mark A.
  4. Close: Close the filler cap.

Take care under the bonnet: some parts of the engine can be extremely hot and can burn you, and the cooling fan can start at any time, even with the ignition off. The reading is only correct if the car is on level ground and the engine has been off for more than 30 minutes. The oil must meet the specification given in the manufacturer's Warranty and Maintenance Record. If a level drops significantly, have that system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

The electronic oil level indicator checks the level for a few seconds after you switch on the ignition, with a message in the display or screen, depending on version. The result is only valid if the car is on level ground and the engine has been off for at least 30 minutes.

  • Level incorrect: "OIL" flashes or a dedicated message appears on the instrument panel. If the dipstick confirms the level is low, top it up to avoid damaging the engine.
  • Fault: "OIL_ _" flashes or a dedicated message appears on the instrument panel. Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Topping up between services or oil changes is normal. PEUGEOT recommends checking the oil level, and topping up if needed, every 3,000 miles (5,000 km).

AdBlue range indicators

These range indicators are only fitted to BlueHDi Diesel versions. When the AdBlue® tank is on reserve, or after a fault is detected with the SCR emissions control system, an indicator shows an estimate of the distance you can still drive before the engine is prevented from starting. It appears when you switch on the ignition.

Running low on AdBlue®

The engine starting prevention system required by regulations switches on automatically once the AdBlue® tank is empty. The warnings change as the range drops:

  • Range greater than 1,500 miles (2,400 km): No range information is shown automatically when you switch on the ignition. Pressing the button shown in the handbook displays the driving range temporarily.
  • Range between 1,500 and 500 miles (2,400 and 800 km), 1.5 litre BlueHDi euro 6.2: When you switch on the ignition, the warning lamp comes on for about thirty seconds with an audible signal and the message "Top up AdBlue: Starting prevented in x miles/km". The reserve level has been reached, so top up as soon as possible.
  • Range between 1,500 and 500 miles (2,400 and 600 km), 1.6 litre BlueHDi euro 6.1: When you switch on the ignition, the warning lamp comes on with an audible signal and a message such as "Top up AdBlue: Starting prevented in x miles". While driving, the message appears approximately every 200 miles (300 km) until you top up. The reserve level has been reached, so top up as soon as possible.
  • Range between 500 and 62 miles (800 and 100 km), 1.5 litre BlueHDi euro 6.2: When you switch on the ignition, the warning lamp comes on with an audible signal (1 beep) and a message such as "Top up AdBlue: Starting impossible in x miles". While driving, the signal and message repeat every 62 miles (100 km) until you top up.
  • Range less than 350 miles (600 km), 1.6 BlueHDi euro 6.1: When you switch on the ignition, the warning lamp flashes, the service warning lamp stays on, and you hear an audible signal with a message such as "Top up AdBlue: Starting impossible in x miles". While driving, the message appears every 30 seconds until you top up.
  • Range less than 60 miles (100 km), 1.5 BlueHDi euro 6.2: When you switch on the ignition, the warning lamp flashes with an audible signal (1 beep) and a message such as "Top up AdBlue: Starting impossible in x miles". While driving, the signal and message repeat every 6 miles (10 km) until you top up.
  • Breakdown, tank empty: When you switch on the ignition, the warning lamp flashes with an audible signal and the message "Top up AdBlue: Starting impossible". The starting prevention system required by legislation stops the engine from starting.

In the last three range stages, you must top up as soon as possible and before the tank is completely empty, otherwise the engine will not restart after your next stop. To restart the engine once the tank is empty, you must add at least 5 litres of AdBlue®. For more on AdBlue® and topping up, see the corresponding section of the handbook.

Fault with the SCR emissions control system

A system that prevents the engine from starting switches on automatically from 685 miles (1,100 km) after a fault with the SCR emissions control system is confirmed. Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop as soon as possible.

  • Fault detected: The warning lamps come on with an audible signal and the message "Emissions fault". The alert appears while driving when the fault is first detected, then each time you switch on the ignition while the fault persists. If the fault is temporary, the alert disappears during the next journey after the SCR system has run its self-diagnosis.
  • Permitted driving phase, between 685 and 0 miles (1,100 and 0 km): Once the fault is confirmed, after 30 miles (50 km) with the fault message permanently shown, the warning lamps come on and the AdBlue warning lamp flashes. You also hear an audible signal and see a message such as "Emissions fault: Starting prevented in 185 miles (300 km)". While driving, the message appears every 30 seconds while the fault persists, and the alert repeats when you switch on the ignition. Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop as soon as possible, or you will not be able to restart the car.
  • Starting prevented: Each time you switch on the ignition, the warning lamps come on and the AdBlue warning lamp flashes, with an audible signal and the message "Emissions fault: Starting prevented". You have gone past the authorised driving limit and the engine cannot be started. Call a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on my Peugeot 2008?

Switch off the ignition, press and hold the trip distance recorder reset button, then switch the ignition back on. When the display shows "=0", release the button and the spanner disappears.

Why is the spanner flashing on my Peugeot 2008 dashboard?

A spanner that flashes and then stays fixed when you switch on the ignition means the servicing interval has been exceeded. Have your car serviced as soon as possible.

What does OIL flashing mean on a Peugeot 2008?

"OIL" flashing means the oil level is incorrect, so check it with the dipstick and top up if it is low. If "OIL_ _" flashes instead, there is a fault and you should contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

How much AdBlue do I need to restart my Peugeot 2008 when the tank is empty?

You must add at least 5 litres of AdBlue® to the tank before the engine can be restarted.

A quick look at these gauges and indicators helps you keep your Peugeot 2008 serviced on time and spot a low level before it causes a problem. If a reading worries you, stop somewhere safe and contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
