Peugeot 2008 Fuel and Refuelling (2016-present)

How to refuel your Peugeot 2008 I safely, what the low fuel lamp means, how misfuel prevention works and how to prime a Diesel after running out.

A first-generation facelift Peugeot 2008 stopped on a ring-road hard shoulder at night in the rain, existing same-generation cover

This guide covers the fuel side of your Peugeot 2008: how big the tank is, how to refuel safely, what the low fuel level warning lamp means and what happens to the fuel supply in a collision. It also explains the misfuel prevention device fitted to some Diesel cars and how to restart a Diesel engine after running out of fuel.

Fuel tank

The handbook gives an approximate tank capacity for each engine type.

EngineTank capacity
Petrol enginesApproximately 50 litres
Diesel enginesApproximately 50 litres
BlueHDi Diesel enginesApproximately 45 litres

If your car has Stop & Start, never refuel while the system is in STOP mode. You must switch off the ignition with the key first.

Refilling

A self-adhesive label on the inside of the fuel filler flap reminds you which type of fuel your engine needs. You need to add at least 5 litres of fuel for the fuel gauge to register it.

To refuel in complete safety:

  1. Switch off: switch off the engine.
  2. Open the flap: pull the fuel filler flap open with a finger at the cut-out (1).
  3. Unlock the cap: insert the key in the filler cap, then turn it to the left (2).
  4. Remove the cap: take the cap off and hook it onto the clip on the inside of the flap (3).
  5. Fill up: fill the tank completely, but stop after the 3rd cut-off of the nozzle, as going further could cause malfunctions.

Once you have finished refuelling:

  1. Refit the cap: put the filler cap back in place.
  2. Lock the cap: turn the key to the right, then remove it from the cap.
  3. Close the flap: shut the fuel filler flap.

You cannot remove the key from the lock until the cap is refitted. You may hear a rush of air when you open the filler cap. This is entirely normal and comes from the sealing of the fuel system.

If you have put the wrong fuel in, do not start the engine. You must have the tank drained and refilled with the correct fuel first.

Low fuel level

When the fuel in the tank reaches the low level, the low fuel level warning lamp comes on in the instrument panel. About 5 litres of fuel remain at this point. When the lamp flashes, very little fuel is left. Refuel as soon as possible so you do not run out. If you run out on a Diesel, see the Running out of fuel (Diesel) section below.

Fuel cut-off

Your 2008 has a safety device that cuts off the fuel supply in the event of a collision.

Misfuel prevention (Diesel)

Depending on the country where your car was sold, your Diesel 2008 may have a misfuel prevention device. This mechanical device stops you filling a Diesel tank with petrol, which avoids the risk of engine damage from using the wrong fuel. It sits in the filler neck and you will see it when you remove the filler cap.

Operation

If you put a petrol nozzle into the Diesel tank, it touches the device's flap. The flap stays closed and you cannot fill the tank. Do not force it: use a Diesel nozzle instead.

You can still fill the tank from a fuel can. For a good flow, do not let the can's nozzle touch the flap of the misfuel prevention device directly, and pour slowly.

Travelling abroad

Diesel pump nozzles may be different in other countries, so the misfuel prevention device may make refuelling impossible. Not all Diesel cars have misfuel prevention, so before you travel abroad, check with the PEUGEOT dealer network that your car is suitable for the fuel pumps in the country you are visiting.

Running out of fuel (Diesel)

On cars with HDi engines, you must prime the fuel system if you run out of fuel. If your version has a manual priming pump, see the underbonnet view drawing in the handbook. If your tank has misfuel prevention, see the section above.

If the engine does not start first time, do not keep trying. Start the procedure again from the beginning.

1.5 BlueHDi (euro 6.2) engine

  1. Add fuel: fill the tank with at least 5 litres of Diesel.
  2. Ignition on: switch on the ignition without starting the engine.
  3. Wait: wait around 1 minute, then switch off the ignition.
  4. Start: operate the starter to run the engine.

If the engine does not start, repeat the procedure.

1.6 BlueHDi (Euro 6.1)

  1. Add fuel: fill the tank with at least 5 litres of Diesel.
  2. Ignition on: switch on the ignition without starting the engine.
  3. Wait: wait around 6 seconds, then switch off the ignition.
  4. Repeat: repeat the ignition on and off steps 10 times.
  5. Start: operate the starter to run the engine.

1.6 litre e-HDi

  1. Add fuel: fill the tank with at least 5 litres of Diesel.
  2. Open the bonnet: open the bonnet.
  3. Remove the cover: if necessary, unclip the cover to reach the priming pump.
  4. Prime: press the priming pump repeatedly until you feel resistance. You may feel resistance at the first press.
  5. Start: operate the starter. If the engine does not start at the first attempt, wait around 15 seconds before trying again.
  6. Prime again if needed: if the engine still does not start after a few attempts, operate the priming pump again, then start the engine.
  7. Refit the cover: put the cover back in place and clip it in.
  8. Close the bonnet: close the bonnet again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many litres does the Peugeot 2008 fuel tank hold?

The handbook gives approximately 50 litres for petrol and Diesel engines, and approximately 45 litres for BlueHDi Diesel engines.

How much fuel is left when the Peugeot 2008 low fuel light comes on?

About 5 litres remain when the low fuel level warning lamp comes on. If the lamp flashes, very little fuel is left, so refuel as soon as possible.

Why can't I fill my Diesel Peugeot 2008 at the pump?

Your car may have a misfuel prevention device, which stays closed if a petrol nozzle is used. Abroad, Diesel nozzles may be different, so the device may make refuelling impossible.

What should I do if I put the wrong fuel in my Peugeot 2008?

Do not start the engine. You must have the tank drained and refilled with the correct fuel first.

Refuelling your 2008 is simple once you know the steps, and a quick glance at the label inside the filler flap confirms the right fuel. If you run out on a Diesel, follow the priming procedure for your engine, and for anything you are unsure about, check the handbook or ask a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
