Orange warning lamps on your Peugeot Expert tell you that a fault has been detected or that a system has changed its operating status. Some come on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and should go off as soon as the engine starts. If one comes on and stays on, there may be a fault that needs further investigation.

This guide covers the third-generation Peugeot Expert van, built from 2016 to 2024 and applies to vans built from 1 December 2022. Some lamps depend on the version or equipment, for example Diesel or electric models, the electric parking brake or an automatic gearbox, so not every lamp will appear on your van.

Service

Electric parking brake fault warning lightService warning light

This is the orange Service warning lamp, and it appears with a message on the instrument panel. It warns you about one or more faults that have no warning lamp of their own. If it comes on only for a while, the fault is minor. If it stays on, the fault is major.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on temporarily:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find out what the fault is.
  • You may be able to sort some faults yourself, such as changing the battery in the remote control.
  • For other faults, such as a problem with the tyre under-inflation detection system, go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find out what the fault is.
  • Then go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Release not available (with electric parking brake)

Electric parking brake fault warning light

This alert uses the orange Service warning lamp. It stays on with the message "Parking brake fault" when automatic release of the electric parking brake is not available.

What to do:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Service

This alert combines the orange Service warning lamp with the service spanner symbol. The Service lamp stays on while the spanner flashes and then stays on, which means the servicing interval has been exceeded. It applies only to BlueHDi Diesel engines.

What to do:

  • Have your van serviced as soon as possible.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

ABS warning light

This is the orange ABS warning lamp. When it stays on, the anti-lock braking system has a fault.

What to do:

  • Your van still has conventional braking.
  • Drive carefully at a moderate speed.
  • Then go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

AdBlue® (Euro 6.3/6.4)

AdBlue warning light

This is the orange AdBlue® warning lamp. It reminds you to top up the AdBlue® as the remaining driving range falls, with a message showing the range and, at the later stages, an audible signal. If the tank runs empty, the engine will not start.

What to do:

On for around 30 seconds at start-up, with 1,500 to 500 miles (2,400 to 800 km) left:

  • Top up the AdBlue®.

On steadily at ignition, with 500 to 62 miles (800 to 100 km) left:

  • Top up the AdBlue® promptly, or go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Flashing, with less than 62 miles (100 km) left:

  • You must top up the AdBlue® to avoid the engine being prevented from starting.
  • Alternatively, go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Flashing with a message that starting is prevented, because the AdBlue® tank is empty and the legally required engine immobiliser is stopping the engine from starting:

  • Top up the AdBlue® to restart the engine, or contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
  • You must add at least 10 litres of AdBlue® to the tank.

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi)

AdBlue warning lightElectric parking brake fault warning lightAmber engine warning light

This alert uses the orange AdBlue® warning lamp together with the Service and Engine self-diagnostics warning lamps, with an audible signal and a message. It warns you of a malfunction of the SCR emissions control system, which can eventually stop the engine from starting.

What to do:

All three lamps on steadily at ignition, meaning an SCR malfunction has been detected:

  • The alert disappears once the exhaust emissions return to normal levels.

AdBlue® lamp flashing with the Service and Engine self-diagnostics lamps steady, and a driving range message:

  • Depending on the message, you can drive up to 685 miles (1,100 km) before the engine immobiliser is triggered.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay to avoid starting being prevented.

The same lamps with a message that starting is prevented:

  • The engine immobiliser is stopping the engine from restarting, because the permitted driving limit was exceeded after an emissions control malfunction was confirmed.
  • To start the engine, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine self-diagnostic system (Diesel)

Amber engine warning lightTyre pressure warning lightRed stop warning light

This is the orange Engine self-diagnostics warning lamp. Whether it flashes or stays on, and which other lamps appear with it, tells you whether the fault is in the engine management, the emissions control system or the engine itself.

What to do:

Engine lamp flashing, meaning the engine management system has a fault:

  • There is a risk that the catalytic converter will be destroyed.
  • You must contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine lamp on steadily, meaning the emissions control system has a fault:

  • The lamp should go off when the engine is started.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

Engine lamp on steadily with the Service warning lamp, meaning a minor engine fault has been detected:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

A separate pair of warning symbols on steadily, meaning a major engine fault has been detected:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so and switch off the ignition.
  • Then contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Automatic functions deactivated (electric parking brake)

Electric parking brake auto off indicator

This is the orange automatic functions lamp for the electric parking brake. When it stays on, automatic application (when you switch off the engine) and automatic release (when you accelerate) are deactivated.

What to do:

If automatic application and release are no longer possible, follow these steps:

  • Start the engine, apply the electric parking brake with the control, then take your foot fully off the brake pedal.
  • Hold the control in the release direction for between 10 and 15 seconds, then let go.
  • Press and hold the brake pedal, pull the control in the application direction for 2 seconds, then release both the control and the brake pedal.

Malfunction (with electric parking brake)

Electric parking brake fault warning lightElectric parking brake auto off indicator

This alert uses the orange electric parking brake fault lamp with the Service warning lamp, together with the message "Parking brake fault". If the automatic functions lamp comes on as well, the fault is more serious.

What to do:

Parking brake fault lamp and Service lamp on, meaning the van cannot be immobilised with the engine running:

  • If manual application and release do not work, the electric parking brake control is faulty.
  • You must use the automatic functions at all times, and they are reactivated automatically if the control develops a fault.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Parking brake fault lamp, automatic functions lamp and Service lamp on, meaning the electric parking brake is faulty and manual and automatic functions may not work:

  • When stationary, pull and hold the electric parking brake control for approximately 7 to 15 seconds, until the indicator lamp lights up on the instrument panel.
  • If that does not work, park on a level surface and engage a gear with a manual gearbox, or with an automatic gearbox or drive selector select mode P and place the supplied chock against one of the wheels.
  • Then contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Braking

Amber brake warning light

This is the orange braking warning lamp. When it stays on, a minor fault with the braking system has been detected.

What to do:

  • Drive carefully.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Collision Risk Alert/Active Safety Brake

Collision alert warning light

This system has its own orange Collision Risk Alert/Active Safety Brake lamp, plus a separate lamp that shows the system is switched off. The main lamp flashes while the system is braking and stays on if there is a fault.

What to do:

Main lamp flashing, meaning the system is briefly braking the van to reduce the speed of a collision with the vehicle in front:

  • For more information, see the Driving section of your handbook.

Main lamp on steadily with a message and an audible signal, meaning the system has a fault:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Deactivation lamp on with a message, meaning the system has been switched off via the vehicle configuration menu:

  • This is for information, confirming the system is switched off.

Dynamic stability control /Anti-slip regulation (DSC)

Stability control warning light

This is the orange DSC/ASR lamp. It flashes while the system is working and stays on if the system has a fault.

What to do:

Lamp flashing, meaning DSC/ASR is regulating because of a loss of grip or trajectory:

  • This shows the system is working.

Lamp on steadily, meaning the DSC/ASR system has a fault:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Emergency brake malfunction (with electric parking brake)

Stability control warning lightElectric parking brake fault warning light

This alert shows the orange DSC/ASR lamp and the Service warning lamp together, with the message "Parking brake fault". It means emergency braking does not deliver optimal performance.

What to do:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Dynamic stability control /Anti-slip regulation (DSC)

This is the orange DSC/ASR deactivation lamp. When it stays on, the system is deactivated.

What to do:

  • The DSC/ASR system is reactivated automatically when you restart the van, and at speeds above approximately 31 mph (50 km/h).
  • Below 31 mph (50 km/h), you can reactivate it manually.

Under-inflation

Tyre pressure warning light

This is the orange under-inflation warning lamp. On its own it warns of low tyre pressure. If it flashes first and the Service warning lamp comes on too, the monitoring system itself is faulty.

What to do:

Lamp on steadily with an audible signal and a message, meaning the pressure in one or more tyres is too low:

  • Check the tyre pressures as soon as possible.
  • Reinitialise the detection system once you have adjusted the pressures.

Lamp flashing then steady with the Service lamp on, meaning the tyre pressure monitoring system is faulty:

  • Tyre under-inflation is no longer being monitored.
  • Check the tyre pressures as soon as possible.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine preheating (Diesel)

Diesel preheat indicator

This is the orange engine preheating lamp. It comes on for a while when you switch on the ignition if the weather and the engine temperature make it necessary, and can stay on for up to approximately 30 seconds in severe weather.

What to do:

  • Wait until the lamp goes off before starting.
  • Once it goes off, the engine starts straight away if you press and hold the clutch pedal with a manual gearbox, or the brake pedal with an automatic gearbox.
  • If the engine does not start, make the starting request again while keeping your foot on the pedal.

Front passenger airbag (ON)

Passenger airbag on indicator

This is the orange front passenger airbag ON lamp. When it stays on, the front passenger airbag is activated and its control is in the "ON" position.

What to do:

  • Do NOT fit a rearward facing child seat on the front passenger seat, as there is a risk of serious injury.

Front passenger airbag (OFF)

Passenger airbag off indicator

This is the orange front passenger airbag OFF lamp. When it stays on, the front passenger airbag is deactivated and its control is set to the "OFF" position.

What to do:

  • You can fit a rearward facing child seat, unless there is a fault with the airbags (Airbags warning lamp on).

Airbags

Amber airbag warning light

This is the orange Airbags warning lamp. When it stays on, one of the airbags or seat belt pyrotechnic pretensioners is faulty.

What to do:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Low fuel level (Diesel)

Amber low fuel warning light

The orange low fuel warning lamp or LED stays on, depending on the version the needle sits in the red zone, and you hear an audible signal and see a message. When it first comes on, there are less than 8 litres of fuel left in the tank. Until you refuel, the alert repeats every time you switch on the ignition, more and more often as the tank nears empty.

What to do:

  • Refuel without delay to avoid running out of fuel.
  • Never drive until the tank is completely empty, as this could damage the emissions control and injection systems.

Tortoise mode with limited driving range (Electric)

Turtle mode warning light

This is the orange tortoise mode lamp on electric versions. When it stays on, the state of charge of the traction battery is critical and the engine power gradually decreases.

What to do:

  • You must put the van on charge.
  • If the lamp stays on, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Pedestrian horn (Electric)

Pedestrian horn warning light

This is the orange pedestrian horn lamp on electric versions. When it stays on, a horn fault has been detected.

What to do:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Water in Diesel fuel filter (Diesel)

Water in diesel warning light

This is the orange water in Diesel fuel filter lamp. On vans with the LCD instrument panel, it stays on when the Diesel fuel filter contains water.

What to do:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay, as there is a risk of damaging the fuel injection system.

Particle filter (Diesel)

Particle filter warning light

This is the orange particle filter lamp. It stays on with an audible signal and a message, either because the filter is nearly saturated or because the additive level is too low.

What to do:

Message about the risk of particle filter blockage, meaning the filter is nearing saturation:

  • As soon as traffic conditions allow, regenerate the filter by driving at a speed of at least 37 mph (60 km/h) with the engine speed above 2,500 rpm.
  • Keep going until the lamp goes off.

Message that the additive level is too low, meaning the additive tank has reached its low level:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay to have the additive topped up.

Power steering

Amber power steering warning light

This is the orange power steering warning lamp. When it stays on, the power steering has a fault.

What to do:

  • Drive carefully at a moderate speed.
  • Then go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Rear foglamp

Rear fog lamp indicator

This is the orange rear foglamp indicator. When it stays on, the rear foglamp is switched on.

What to do:

  • This is for information, confirming the rear foglamp is on.

Foot on the brake

Foot on brake indicator

This is the orange foot on the brake lamp. When it stays on, there is not enough pressure, or none at all, on the brake pedal.

What to do:

  • With the automatic gearbox or the drive selector, you may need to press the brake pedal to unlock the gearbox from mode N.

Foot on the clutch

Foot on clutch indicator

This is the orange foot on the clutch lamp. When it stays on, Stop & Start has refused to switch to START mode because the clutch pedal is not fully pressed.

What to do:

  • Press the clutch pedal all the way down.

If You're Not Sure

If you are not sure which lamp you are seeing, check whether it is steady or flashing, read any message on the instrument panel and compare it with the descriptions above and in your handbook. An orange lamp that stays on may point to a fault that needs further investigation, so if in doubt, stop somewhere safe and contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Most orange lamps ask you to act soon rather than immediately, but they are always worth taking seriously. Read the message, follow the steps for your lamp and have any fault looked at by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop to keep your Expert working as it should.
