Orange warning lamps on your Peugeot 508 usually mean a fault has been found that needs looking into, although some simply tell you that a system is switched off or working. Some orange lamps come on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and should go out as soon as the engine starts. A lamp may also come with an audible signal and/or a message on a screen.

This guide covers the Peugeot 508 II, based on handbook edition ed01-23 for cars produced from 1 March 2023 onwards. Some lamps only appear on certain versions or with certain equipment, so you may not see every one of them on your car.

Service

Service warning lamp iconService warning lamp icon

This is the orange Service warning lamp, and it always comes with a message. If it comes on only for a while, one or more minor faults have been found that have no warning lamp of their own. If it stays on, the fault or faults are major.

What to do:

If it comes on for a while with a message:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find out what the fault is.
  • You can sort out some faults yourself, such as replacing the battery in the remote control.
  • For other faults, such as a problem with the tyre under-inflation detection system, take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it stays on with a message:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find out what the fault is.
  • Then take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Release not available (with electric parking brake)

Release not available (with electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

This alert uses the orange Service warning lamp. It stays on with the message "Parking brake fault" when the electric parking brake can no longer release itself automatically.

What to do:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Service

Here the Service warning lamp appears together with the service spanner symbol. The Service lamp stays on while the spanner flashes and then stays on, which means the servicing interval has been exceeded.

What to do:

  • Have the car serviced as soon as possible.
  • This alert applies only to cars with BlueHDi Diesel engines.

Engine preheating (Diesel)

Engine preheating (Diesel) warning lamp icon

This orange preheating lamp appears on Diesel engines when you switch on the ignition. It comes on for a short time when the weather and engine temperature make preheating necessary, and can stay on for up to about 30 seconds in severe weather.

What to do:

  • Wait until the lamp goes out before starting the engine.
  • Once it has gone out, the engine starts straight away if you press and hold the brake pedal.
  • If the engine does not start, make the starting request again while keeping your foot on the brake pedal.

Low fuel level

Low fuel level warning lamp icon

This orange low fuel lamp stays on, with the reserve level shown in red, and comes with an audible signal and a message. When it first comes on, you have about 6 litres of fuel left in the tank. Until you refuel, the alert repeats every time you switch on the ignition, more and more often as the level gets closer to zero.

What to do:

  • Refuel without delay so you do not run out of fuel.
  • Never drive until the tank is completely empty, as this could damage the emissions control and injection systems.

Engine self-diagnostic system

Engine self-diagnostic system warning lamp icon

This is the orange engine self-diagnostic lamp. If it flashes, the engine management system has a fault. If it stays on, the fault is in the emissions control system.

What to do:

If it flashes:

  • There is a risk of destroying the catalytic converter.
  • You must contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it stays on:

  • The lamp should go out when the engine is started.
  • Take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

AdBlue® (BlueHDi)

AdBlue® (BlueHDi) warning lamp icon

This orange AdBlue® lamp warns you as the driving range left on your AdBlue® gets shorter, and a message shows you that range. The way the lamp lights up tells you how urgent topping up has become.

What to do:

If it comes on for around 30 seconds when you start the car, with a range between 1,500 and 500 miles (2,400 and 800 km):

  • Top up the AdBlue®.

If it stays on when you switch on the ignition, with an audible signal and a range between 500 and 62 miles (800 and 100 km):

  • Top up the AdBlue® promptly, or take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it flashes with an audible signal and a range of less than 62 miles (100 km):

  • You must top up the AdBlue® to stop the engine being prevented from starting, or take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it flashes with an audible signal and a message saying starting is prevented:

  • The AdBlue® tank is empty and the legally required engine immobiliser is stopping the engine from starting.
  • To restart the engine, top up the AdBlue® or contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
  • You must add at least 10 litres of AdBlue® to the tank.

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi)

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi) warning lamp iconSCR emissions control system (BlueHDi) warning lamp icon

Here the orange AdBlue® lamp and the engine self-diagnostic lamp come on together, with an audible signal and a message. They tell you that a malfunction of the SCR emissions control system has been detected and, if it carries on, how close the engine immobiliser is to stopping the engine from starting.

What to do:

If both lamps stay on when you switch on the ignition:

  • The alert goes away once exhaust emissions are back to normal levels.

If the AdBlue® lamp flashes and the engine self-diagnostic lamp stays on, with a message showing the driving range:

  • Depending on the message, you can drive for up to 685 miles (1,100 km) before the engine immobiliser is triggered.
  • Take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay so that starting is not prevented.

If the same lamps come on with a message saying starting is prevented:

  • The permitted driving limit has been exceeded after an emissions control fault was confirmed, so the engine immobiliser stops the engine from restarting.
  • To start the engine, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Automatic functions deactivated (electric parking brake)

Automatic functions deactivated (electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

This orange lamp stays on when the automatic functions of the electric parking brake are switched off. The brake will no longer apply itself when you switch off the engine or release itself when you accelerate.

What to do:

If automatic application and release are no longer possible:

  • Start the engine, apply the electric parking brake using its control, then take your foot fully off the brake pedal.
  • Hold the control in the release direction for between 10 and 15 seconds, then let go of it.
  • Press and hold the brake pedal, pull the control in the application direction for 2 seconds, then let go of both the control and the brake pedal.

Malfunction (with electric parking brake)

Malfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp iconMalfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp iconMalfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

This orange parking brake malfunction lamp comes on with the Service warning lamp and the message "Parking brake fault". With just these two lamps on, the car cannot be held stationary with the engine running. If the Automatic functions deactivated lamp also comes on, the electric parking brake itself is faulty and both manual and automatic functions may not be working.

What to do:

If the malfunction lamp and the Service lamp are on:

  • If the manual apply and release commands do not work, the electric parking brake control is faulty.
  • Always use the automatic functions, which switch back on by themselves if the control develops a fault.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the Automatic functions deactivated lamp is also on:

  • When stationary, pull and hold the electric parking brake control for about 7 to 15 seconds, until the indicator lamp lights up on the instrument panel.
  • If that does not work, park on a level surface, select mode P on the automatic gearbox and place the supplied chock against one of the wheels.
  • Then contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Braking

Braking warning lamp icon

This orange symbol belongs to the Collision Risk Alert and Active Safety Brake system. It flashes when the system briefly brakes the car to reduce the speed of a collision with the vehicle in front, and stays on when the system is off, faulty or its sensor is masked. In some cases the Service warning lamp or another warning lamp comes on with it.

What to do:

If it flashes:

  • The system is braking the car for a moment. See the Driving section of the handbook for more information.

If it stays on with a message after you switched the system off on the touch screen:

  • This simply confirms that the system has been deactivated.

If it stays on with a message and an audible signal:

  • The system has a fault. Take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it stays on with the message "Driving Assistance Sensor blind: Clean sensor, see User Manual":

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so and switch off the ignition.
  • Clean the front camera.

If it stays on together with the Service warning lamp:

  • The system has a fault.
  • If both lamps come on again after you switch off and restart the engine, take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it stays on together with another warning lamp because a seat belt is not fastened:

  • The system is temporarily off because the driver and/or front passenger (depending on version) is in their seat without the seat belt fastened.
  • Fasten the seat belt.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

  • Then take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Dynamic stability control /Anti-slip regulation (DSC)

Dynamic stability control /Anti-slip regulation (DSC) warning lamp iconDynamic stability control /Anti-slip regulation (DSC) warning lamp icon

The DSC/ASR system uses two orange symbols. One stays on when the system has been deactivated. The other flashes while the system is regulating after a loss of grip or trajectory, and stays on if the system has a fault.

What to do:

If the deactivation symbol stays on:

  • The system switches back on by itself when you start the car, and at speeds above about 31 mph (50 km/h).
  • Below 31 mph (50 km/h), you can switch it back on manually.

If the second symbol flashes:

  • This shows the system is regulating because of a loss of grip or trajectory.

If the second symbol stays on:

  • The DSC/ASR system has a fault. Take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Emergency brake malfunction (with electric parking brake)

Emergency brake malfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp iconEmergency brake malfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

Here the DSC/ASR fault symbol and the Service warning lamp both stay on, with the message "Parking brake fault". It means emergency braking will not perform as well as it should.

This orange lane keeping assist symbol flashes when you are about to cross a broken lane marking without using your direction indicators. It stays on when the system has been switched off automatically or put on standby, when its sensor is masked, or, together with the Service warning lamp, when it has a fault.

What to do:

If it flashes:

  • The system steps in and corrects your trajectory if it detects a risk of you crossing a line or hard shoulder (depending on version) without meaning to.
  • See the Driving section of the handbook for more information.

If it stays on by itself:

  • This shows the system has been switched off automatically or placed on standby.

If it stays on with the message "Driving Assistance Sensor blind: Clean sensor, see User Manual":

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so and switch off the ignition.

This orange under-inflation lamp stays on when the pressure in one or more tyres is too low. If it flashes and then stays on, with the Service warning lamp also on, the tyre pressure monitoring system is faulty.

What to do:

If the under-inflation lamp stays on by itself:

  • Check your tyre pressures as soon as possible.
  • Reinitialise the detection system once you have adjusted the pressures.

If it flashes then stays on, with the Service warning lamp on:

  • Tyre under-inflation is no longer being monitored.
  • Check your tyre pressures as soon as possible.
  • Take the car to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
