Peugeot 308 I CC Indicators: Red Warnings (2008-present)

What each red warning lamp on your Peugeot 308 I CC means, from STOP to the parking brake, and what you should do when one comes on.

A red warning lamp on your instrument panel means there is a fault that needs action from you, either while the engine is running or while you are driving. When one comes on, it is always shown with an extra message to help you identify the problem, and it may also come with an audible signal.

This guide covers the first-generation Peugeot 308 CC and is based on the handbook for cars produced from 1 November 2013. Some lamps and messages depend on your version or equipment, including the type of instrument panel fitted, so your car may not show every lamp listed here.

STOP

STOP warning lamp icon

This red lamp shows the word STOP. It stays on, either alone or together with another warning lamp, and comes with an audible signal and a message on the screen. It means there is a serious fault with the braking system, the power steering, the engine lubrication system or the cooling system.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so, as there is a risk the engine could cut out while you are driving.
  • Park the car and switch off the ignition.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Braking

This is the red braking warning lamp. It stays on together with the STOP warning lamp, and it means the brake fluid level is too low.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Top up the brake fluid with the fluid recommended by PEUGEOT.
  • If the problem continues, have the braking system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Maximum coolant temperature

Maximum coolant temperature warning lamp icon

This is the red coolant temperature warning lamp. It stays on while the coolant temperature needle is in the red zone, and it means the cooling system is running too hot.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Wait until the engine has cooled down, then top up the coolant if needed.
  • If the problem continues, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Seat belt not fastened / unfastened

Seat belt not fastened / unfastened warning lamp icon

This is the red seat belt warning lamp. It comes on steadily and then flashes in the display for the passenger seat belt and front airbag warning lamps. It means someone in the car has not fastened their seat belt, or has unfastened it.

What to do:

If the driver or front passenger has not fastened, or has unfastened, their seat belt:

  • Pull out the belt in question and push the tongue into the buckle.

If at least one rear passenger has unfastened their seat belt:

  • Make sure the rear passenger fastens their belt again.
  • For more details, see the "Seat belts" section of your handbook.

Parking brake

This is the red parking brake warning lamp. It stays on when the parking brake is applied or has not been fully released.

What to do:

  • Keep your foot on the brake pedal and release the parking brake to switch the lamp off.
  • Follow the safety recommendations for the parking brake.
  • For more details, see the "Parking brake" section of your handbook.

If You're Not Sure

If a red lamp comes on and you are not sure what it means, stay calm, stop somewhere safe and read the message shown on the screen, as it is there to help you identify the fault. If you are still unsure, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Some warning lamps light up for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and should go off once the engine starts. If one stays on, check what it means before you move off, so you know your Peugeot 308 CC is ready for the road.
