Peugeot 308 I CC Indicators: Orange Warnings (2008-present)

What each orange warning lamp on your Peugeot 308 I CC means and what to do, from the engine and ABS lamps to low fuel and the airbag indicator.

Orange warning lamps on your dashboard point to a fault that needs your attention, or confirm that a system is switched on or off. When a warning lamp comes on, a message also appears on the screen to help you identify the fault, and sometimes you will hear an audible signal too.

This guide covers the first-generation Peugeot 308 CC (2008-present), based on handbook edition 01-14 for cars produced from 1 November 2013. Some lamps only appear on certain versions or with certain equipment, so your car may not have all of them.

Braking

Braking warning lamp icon

This is the braking warning lamp. When it stays on together with the STOP and ABS warning lamps, there is a fault with the electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) system.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Service

Service warning lamp icon

This is the Service warning lamp. It warns you of faults that don't have a warning lamp of their own. If it comes on briefly with a message, the fault is minor. If it stays on with a message and an audible signal, the fault is major.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on briefly with a message:

  • Read the message on the screen to find out what the fault is. Examples include a door, the boot or the bonnet left open, a low engine oil level, a low screenwash or headlamp wash reservoir level, a flat remote control battery, a fault with tyre under-inflation detection, or a saturated particle emission filter on Diesel models. For the filter, see the "Checks" section of the handbook under "Checking levels / Particle emissions filter".
  • For any other fault, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on with a message and an audible signal:

  • Read the message on the screen to find out what the fault is.
  • Then contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine autodiagnosis system

Engine autodiagnosis system warning lamp icon

This is the engine autodiagnosis warning lamp. If it flashes, there is a fault with the engine management system, and the catalytic converter could be destroyed. If it stays on, there is a fault with the emission control system.

What to do:

If the lamp is flashing:

  • Bear in mind that the catalytic converter could be destroyed.
  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on:

  • Check whether the lamp goes off when you start the engine, as it should.
  • If it doesn't go off, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

Low fuel level

Low fuel level warning lamp icon

This is the low fuel level warning lamp. It stays on with the fuel gauge needle in the red zone, along with an audible signal and a message. When it first comes on, there are about 6 litres of fuel left in the tank and you have started using the reserve.

What to do:

  • Refuel as soon as possible so you don't run out. The tank holds about 60 litres.
  • Until you add enough fuel, the lamp, the audible signal and the message will return every time you switch on the ignition. They repeat more and more often as the fuel level drops towards zero.
  • Never keep driving until the tank is empty, as this could damage the emission control and injection systems.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning lamp icon

This is the ABS warning lamp. When it stays on, there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system. Your car still has conventional braking.

What to do:

  • Drive carefully and at a reduced speed.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

Dynamic stability control (DSC/ASR)

Dynamic stability control (DSC/ASR) warning lamp iconDynamic stability control (DSC/ASR) warning lamp iconDynamic stability control (DSC/ASR) warning lamp icon

This lamp has three possible displays. If the DSC/ASR lamp flashes, the system is working to improve traction and keep the car stable if it loses grip or starts to go off its line. If the DSC/ASR fault lamp stays on, the system has a fault. If the tyre pressure icon stays on, the pressure in one or more wheels is too low.

What to do:

If the DSC/ASR lamp is flashing:

  • You don't need to do anything. The system is simply helping to keep your car stable.

If the DSC/ASR fault lamp stays on:

  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the tyre pressure icon stays on:

  • Check your tyre pressures as soon as possible.
  • If you can, do this while the tyres are cold.

Underinflation

Underinflation warning lamp icon

This is the underinflation warning lamp. If it flashes and then stays on, together with the Service warning lamp, either the tyre pressure monitoring system has a fault or no sensor can be detected on one of the wheels. Under-inflation detection can no longer be relied on.

What to do:

  • Have the tyre pressure monitoring system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Rear foglamps

Rear foglamps warning lamp icon

This is the rear foglamps indicator. When it stays on, your rear foglamps are switched on.

What to do:

  • To switch off the rear foglamps, turn the ring on the lighting stalk rearwards.

Diesel engine pre-heating

Diesel engine pre-heating warning lamp icon

This is the Diesel pre-heating indicator. It stays on when the ignition switch is at the second position, with the ignition on. How long it stays on depends on the weather conditions.

What to do:

  • Wait until the lamp goes out before you start the engine.

Passenger's front airbag

Passenger's front airbag warning lamp iconPassenger's front airbag warning lamp icon

This indicator appears in the seat belt and passenger's front airbag warning lamps display. The "ON" indicator stays on when the control switch on the passenger's side of the dashboard is set to "ON", which means the passenger's front airbag is activated. The "OFF" indicator stays on when the switch is set to "OFF", which means the airbag is deactivated.

What to do:

If the airbag "ON" indicator is showing:

  • Do not fit a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat.
  • If you have no rear-facing child seat on that seat, it is best to leave the airbag activated.
  • Before fitting a rear-facing child seat, turn the control switch to "OFF".

If the airbag "OFF" indicator is showing:

  • You can fit a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat.
  • To activate the passenger's front airbag, turn the switch to "ON". Once you do, you cannot fit a rear-facing child seat on that seat.

If You're Not Sure

Some lamps come on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and should go off once the engine starts. If a lamp stays on, check the information for that lamp before you move off and read the message on the screen. If you are still unsure, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Orange lamps rarely mean you have to stop straight away, but they shouldn't be ignored. Read the message, take the action described above and have any fault checked so your Peugeot 308 CC stays safe and reliable.
