Hello and welcome. In this article we look at tyre pressures and the under-inflation detection system on the Peugeot 208 II (2019-2023). We will cover how the system works, what to do when the alert comes on, how to reinitialise it and where to find the tyre pressure label.

Tyre under-inflation detection

This system alerts you if one or more tyres lose pressure. The alert is raised while the car is moving, not when it is stationary.

It works by comparing information from the wheel speed sensors with reference values. These reference values must be reinitialised every time you adjust the tyre pressures or change a wheel. The system uses the last values stored during reinitialisation, so the tyre pressures must be correct when you do it. This is your responsibility as the driver.

The system never replaces your own vigilance. You still need to check the tyre pressures regularly, including the spare wheel, especially before a long journey. Driving with under-inflated tyres, particularly with a heavy load, at high speed or on a long journey:

  • worsens road-holding
  • lengthens braking distances
  • causes premature wear of the tyres
  • increases energy consumption

Checking tyre pressures: do this monthly when the tyres are cold, which means the car has been stopped for 1 hour or has done a journey of less than 6 miles (10 km) at moderate speeds. If the tyres are not cold, add 0.3 bar to the pressures shown on the label.

You will find the pressures for your car on the tyre pressure label, covered in the Identification markings section below. You do not need to reinitialise the system after fitting or removing snow chains.

Under-inflation alert

The alert is shown by the under-inflation warning lamp staying on, with an audible signal and, depending on equipment, a message.

  1. Slow down: reduce speed immediately, avoid excessive steering movements and avoid sudden braking.
  2. Stop: stop the car as soon as it is safe to do so.
  3. Check all four tyres: using a compressor, such as the one in the temporary puncture repair kit, check the pressures of all four tyres when cold.
  4. If you cannot check straight away: drive carefully at reduced speed.
  5. If you have a puncture: use the temporary puncture repair kit or the spare wheel, depending on equipment.

A loss of pressure does not always cause visible deformation of the tyre, so do not rely on just looking at it. Driving too slowly may not ensure optimum monitoring. The alert is not triggered immediately after a sudden loss of pressure or a tyre blow-out, because analysing the wheel speed sensor values can take several minutes. It may also be delayed at speeds below 25 mph (40 km/h) or when you adopt a sporty driving mode.

The alert stays active until you reinitialise the system.

Reinitialisation

You must reinitialise the system after adjusting the pressure of one or more tyres, and after changing one or more wheels.

  1. Check the pressures: make sure all four tyres are at the correct pressure for how you are using the car, as shown on the tyre pressure label.
  2. Stop the car: the car must be stationary.
  3. Reinitialise: use the Driving/Vehicle menu on the touch screen.

The system does not tell you if a pressure is wrong at the time of reinitialisation, so always check the four tyres first.

Malfunction

If the system develops a fault, warning lamps come on in the instrument panel and a message appears with an audible signal. Tyre under-inflation monitoring is then no longer carried out.

Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Non-standard or space-saver spare wheel: using this type of spare wheel may suspend tyre pressure monitoring. The malfunction warning lamp comes on, and it goes off once the wheel has been replaced by one the same size as the others, the pressure has been readjusted and the system has been reinitialised.

Identification markings

Your 208 carries several markings for vehicle identification.

Scroll the table sideways.

MarkingWhere to find it
A. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)Under the bonnet, stamped on the chassis
B. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)On the dashboard, on an adhesive label visible through the windscreen
C. Manufacturer's labelOn the right-hand door
D. Tyres/paint code labelOn the driver's door

The manufacturer's label shows:

  • Manufacturer's name
  • European whole vehicle type approval number
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Gross vehicle weight (GVW)
  • Gross train weight (GTW)
  • Maximum weight on the front axle
  • Maximum weight on the rear axle

The tyres/paint code label shows:

  • Tyre pressures, unladen and laden
  • Tyre specification: dimensions and type, plus load and speed indices
  • Spare tyre inflation pressure
  • Paint colour code

Your car may have been fitted at the factory with tyres that have higher load and speed indices than those on the label, and this does not affect the tyre pressures (on cold tyres). If you change the type of tyres, contact a PEUGEOT dealer for the tyre fits approved for your car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the tyre pressures for my Peugeot 208?

They are on the tyres/paint code label on the driver's door. It shows the pressures unladen and laden, as well as the spare tyre inflation pressure.

How do I reset the tyre pressure warning on a Peugeot 208?

Check that all four tyres are at the correct pressure, then, with the car stationary, reinitialise the system via the Driving/Vehicle menu on the touch screen.

Why did the tyre pressure warning not come on straight away after a puncture?

The system analyses values from the wheel speed sensors, which can take several minutes. The alert may also be delayed below 25 mph (40 km/h) or in a sporty driving mode.

Do I need to reset the system after fitting snow chains?

No. The system does not have to be reinitialised after you fit or remove snow chains.

The under-inflation detection system is a helpful backup, but it does not replace regular checks. Check your tyre pressures monthly when cold, reinitialise the system after every adjustment or wheel change, and you will keep your Peugeot 208 safer on the road.
