Peugeot 206 I Indicators: Orange Warnings (2002-2004)

What each orange warning light on the Peugeot 206 means and what to do, based on the handbook for cars built from October 2003 onwards.

Orange warning lights on your Peugeot 206 dashboard tell you about a fault, a system that is switched off, or something that needs your attention. This guide explains each one in plain English and what to do when it comes on.

It covers the first-generation Peugeot 206 (2002-2004) and is based on the handbook edition for cars produced from 1 October 2003. Some lights are only fitted depending on the version, equipment or destination country, so your car may not have all of them.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light

This light shows the ABS symbol. It comes on for several seconds each time you switch the ignition on, which is normal. If it stays on, or comes on above 8 mph (12 km/h), there is a fault with the ABS. If it comes on with an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display, this also means there is a fault in the ABS system. Your car still has conventional servo-assisted braking.

What to do:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Dynamic stability control system (ESP/ASR) warning light

Dynamic stability control system (ESP/ASR) warning light warning lamp icon

This light shows the ESP/ASR stability control symbol. It comes on for a few seconds each time you switch the ignition on. With the engine running and the car moving, it comes on when the system is working, and it stays on permanently when the system is switched off.

If the light comes on because the system is working or has been switched off:

  • The handbook does not give a specific action for this.

If the light stays on with the engine running and the car moving:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Engine diagnostics warning light

This light shows the engine symbol and is fitted depending on the model. It comes on for a few seconds each time you switch the ignition on. If it comes on with the engine running, the injection, ignition or emission control system is not working properly. If it flashes, there is a risk of damage to the catalytic converter.

If the light stays on with the engine running:

  • The handbook does not give a specific action for this case.

If the light flashes:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Diesel engine pre-heat warning light

This light shows the diesel pre-heat symbol. It comes on when you switch the ignition on in a diesel car. If the engine temperature is already high enough, it only comes on for less than one second.

If the light stays on after you switch the ignition on:

  • Wait until the light goes out before starting the engine.

If the light comes on for less than one second:

  • You can start the engine straight away without waiting.

Low fuel level warning light

This light shows the fuel pump symbol. When it first comes on, you have enough fuel left to drive approximately 30 miles (50 km). The fuel tank holds approximately 50 litres.

What to do:

  • The handbook does not give a specific action. Keep in mind the range of approximately 30 miles (50 km) from when the light first comes on.

Water in diesel filter indicator

This light shows the diesel filter symbol and is only fitted on some versions. When it comes on, there is water in the diesel filter and a risk of damage to the injection system.

What to do:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.

Passenger air bag disarmed warning light

This light shows the passenger air bag symbol and is fitted depending on the destination country. When it comes on with a message on the multi-function display, the passenger air bag is switched off. It stays on for as long as the passenger air bag remains switched off.

If the light stays on steadily:

  • This simply confirms that the passenger air bag is switched off.

If the light flashes:

  • Always consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Air bags warning light

This light shows the air bag symbol. It comes on for a few seconds when you switch the ignition on, which is normal. If it comes on with the engine running, along with an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display, there is a fault with the air bags.

What to do:

  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If You're Not Sure

If you are not sure what a light means, or it does not behave as described here, check your own handbook, as equipment varies between versions. If the car feels or sounds wrong, stop somewhere safe and consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Orange lights rarely mean you have to stop straight away, but they should not be ignored. Knowing what each one means helps you deal with it calmly and keep your Peugeot 206 in good health.
