An orange lamp on your instrument panel usually means a system has a fault that needs looking into, or that a function has been switched off or is working in a particular way. Some orange lamps also come on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition. They should go off as soon as the engine starts.

This guide covers the second-generation Peugeot 2008 (2023-2025), based on handbook edition ed01-23 for vehicles produced from 03/07/2023. Some lamps only appear on certain versions or with certain equipment, so your car may not have all of them.

Service

Service warning lamp iconService warning lamp icon

The Service lamp is a general warning lamp on the instrument panel. It comes on with a message when the car detects one or more faults that have no warning lamp of their own. It can come on temporarily for minor faults or stay on for major faults.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on temporarily with a message, a minor fault has been found:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find the cause.
  • You may be able to sort some faults yourself, such as changing the battery in the remote control.
  • For other faults, such as a problem with the tyre under-inflation detection system, go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on with a message, a major fault has been found:

  • Read the message on the instrument panel to find the cause.
  • Then go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on with the message "Audible Warning System fault: Repair needed", the audible warning system has failed:

  • Be aware that Road signs recognition, Active Safety Brake/Collision Risk Alert, Lane keeping assist and Driver Attention Warning by Camera may be disturbed or unavailable.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Release not available (with electric parking brake)

Release not available (with electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

This is the Service lamp, shown together with the message "Parking brake fault". It stays on to tell you that automatic release of the electric parking brake is unavailable.

What to do:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Service

Here the Service lamp comes on together with the service spanner. The Service lamp stays on, while the spanner flashes and then stays on, to show that the servicing interval has been exceeded.

What to do:

  • Have your car serviced as soon as possible.
  • This applies only to cars with BlueHDi Diesel engines.

Engine preheating (Diesel)

Engine preheating (Diesel) warning lamp icon

This lamp shows that the Diesel engine is preheating. It comes on temporarily when you switch on the ignition if the weather and engine temperature make it necessary, for up to approximately 30 seconds in severe weather.

What to do:

  • Wait until the lamp goes off before starting the engine.
  • Once it goes off, the engine starts straight away if you press and hold the clutch pedal (manual gearbox) or the brake pedal (automatic gearbox).
  • If the engine does not start, ask it to start again while keeping your foot on the pedal.

Particle filter (Diesel)

Particle filter (Diesel) warning lamp icon

This lamp relates to the Diesel particle filter. It stays on with an audible signal and a message, either because the filter is nearing saturation or because the additive tank has reached its low level.

What to do:

If the message warns that the particle filter risks becoming blocked:

  • As soon as traffic conditions allow, regenerate the filter by driving at 37 mph (60 km/h) or more, with the engine speed above 2,500 rpm.
  • Keep driving this way until the lamp goes off.

If the message says the additive level in the particle filter is too low:

  • Have the additive topped up without delay by going to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Tortoise mode with limited driving range (Electric)

Tortoise mode with limited driving range (Electric) warning lamp icon

This is the tortoise lamp for electric versions. It stays on when the traction battery's state of charge is critical, and the power gradually decreases.

What to do:

  • Put your car on charge.
  • If the lamp stays on, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine self-diagnostic system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel)

Engine self-diagnostic system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel) warning lamp icon

This is the engine self-diagnostic lamp. If it flashes, the engine management system has a fault. If it stays on, the emissions control system has a fault.

What to do:

If the lamp is flashing, there is a risk of the catalytic converter being destroyed:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on:

  • The lamp should go off when the engine is started.
  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

Engine self-diagnostics system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel)

Engine self-diagnostics system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel) warning lamp iconEngine self-diagnostics system (Petrol, Hybrid or Diesel) warning lamp icon

Here the engine self-diagnostics lamp comes on together with the Service lamp. Both stay on to show that a minor engine fault has been detected.

What to do:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

AdBlue® (BlueHDi)

AdBlue® (BlueHDi) warning lamp icon

This is the AdBlue® lamp on BlueHDi versions. It comes on with a message showing your remaining driving range, and how it lights up depends on how much range is left.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on for around 30 seconds when you start the car, the range is between 1,500 and 500 miles (2,400 and 800 km):

  • Top up the AdBlue®.

If the lamp stays on when you switch on the ignition, with an audible signal, the range is between 500 and 62 miles (800 and 100 km):

  • Top up the AdBlue® promptly, or go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp flashes with an audible signal and the message shows the range, you have less than 62 miles (100 km) left:

  • You must top up the AdBlue® so that the engine is not prevented from starting, or go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp flashes with an audible signal and a message saying starting is prevented, the AdBlue® tank is empty and the legally required immobiliser stops the engine starting:

  • To restart the engine, top up the AdBlue® or contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
  • You must add at least 10 litres of AdBlue® to the tank.

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi)

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi) warning lamp iconSCR emissions control system (BlueHDi) warning lamp icon

This warning uses the AdBlue® lamp and the Engine self-diagnostics lamp together. They come on with an audible signal and a message when a malfunction of the SCR emissions control system is detected.

What to do:

If both lamps stay on when you switch on the ignition:

  • The alert disappears once exhaust emissions return to normal levels.

If the AdBlue® lamp flashes and the Engine self-diagnostics lamp stays on, with a message showing the range, you may be able to drive up to 685 miles (1,100 km) before the immobiliser is triggered, depending on the message:

  • Go to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay, so that starting is not prevented.

If the AdBlue® lamp flashes and the Engine self-diagnostics lamp stays on, with a message saying starting is prevented, the permitted driving limit has been exceeded and the immobiliser stops the engine restarting:

  • To start the engine, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Automatic functions deactivated (electric parking brake)

Automatic functions deactivated (electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

This lamp relates to the electric parking brake. It stays on when the automatic application (when you switch off the engine) and automatic release (when you accelerate) functions are deactivated.

What to do:

If automatic application or release is no longer possible, follow this sequence:

  • Start the engine, apply the electric parking brake using the control, then take your foot fully off the brake pedal.
  • Hold the control pressed in the release direction for between 10 and 15 seconds, then let go of it.
  • Press and hold the brake pedal, pull the control in the application direction for 2 seconds, then let go of the control and the brake pedal.

Malfunction (with electric parking brake)

Malfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp iconMalfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp iconMalfunction (with electric parking brake) warning lamp icon

The parking brake malfunction lamp stays on with the Service lamp and the message "Parking brake fault". If only these two are on, the car cannot be held with the engine running. If the Automatic functions deactivated lamp also comes on, the electric parking brake itself is faulty and both manual and automatic functions may not work.

What to do:

If the malfunction lamp and the Service lamp are on:

  • If manual application and release do not work, the electric parking brake control is faulty.
  • Use the automatic functions at all times. They are reactivated automatically if the control has a fault.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the Automatic functions deactivated lamp is also on:

  • When stationary, pull and hold the electric parking brake control for approximately 7 to 15 seconds, until the indicator lamp lights up on the instrument panel.
  • If that does not work, park on a level surface, engage a gear (manual gearbox) or select mode P (automatic gearbox or drive selector), then place the supplied chock against one of the wheels.
  • Then contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If You're Not Sure

If a lamp comes on and you cannot match it to one in this guide, read any message shown on the instrument panel and check the description in your handbook. A red or orange warning lamp can point to a fault that needs looking into, so if you are in any doubt, stop somewhere safe and contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Most orange lamps on the Peugeot 2008 are a prompt to check something or to book a visit, not a reason to panic. Note how the lamp lights up, steady or flashing, and what message comes with it, and you will know what to do next.
