The orange lamps on your Peugeot 2008 do different jobs. Some confirm that a system is switched on or has been switched off on purpose. Others warn you of a fault that needs action from you, and this is often backed up by a beep and a message on the screen. Some lamps can stay on steady or flash, and the meaning depends on which one you see and what the car is doing at the time.

This guide covers the first-generation Peugeot 2008 (2013-2015), based on handbook edition ed01-14 for cars produced from 1 May 2014. Not every car has every lamp: some depend on the version or equipment fitted, such as Blue HDi Diesel engines, the type of gearbox or a display screen.

Rear foglamp

Rear foglamp warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the rear foglamp indicator. It stays on steady when you have switched the rear foglamp on using the ring on the lighting control stalk.

What to do:

  • To switch the rear foglamp off, turn the ring on the lighting control stalk rearwards.

Diesel engine pre-heating

Diesel engine pre-heating warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the Diesel pre-heating lamp. It stays on steady when the ignition switch is at the second position, with the ignition on. How long it stays lit depends on the weather, and in extreme conditions it can be up to about thirty seconds.

What to do:

  • Wait until the lamp goes off before you start the engine.
  • If the engine does not start, switch the ignition off and back on, wait for the lamp to go off again, then start the engine.

Foot on the brake pedal

Foot on the brake pedal warning lamp icon

This orange symbol reminds you about the brake pedal. It can stay on steady or flash.

When it is steady, you need to press the brake pedal.

When it flashes on a car with an electronic gearbox, you have been holding the car on a slope with the accelerator for too long and the clutch is overheating.

What to do:

If the lamp is steady:

  • With an electronic gearbox, press the brake pedal to start the engine, with the lever in position N.
  • With an automatic gearbox and the engine running, press the brake pedal before releasing the parking brake, so you can unlock the lever and move it out of position P.
  • If you release the parking brake without pressing the brake pedal, the lamp will stay on.

If the lamp is flashing:

  • Hold the car with the brake pedal and/or the parking brake instead of the accelerator.

Foot on the clutch*

Foot on the clutch* warning lamp icon

This orange symbol relates to the clutch pedal and is only fitted on some versions. It stays on steady when Stop & Start is in STOP mode and refuses to switch to START mode because the clutch pedal is not fully down.

What to do:

  • Press the clutch pedal all the way down so the engine can switch to START mode.

Passenger's airbag system

Passenger's airbag system warning lamp icon

This orange symbol shows the status of the passenger's front airbag. It stays on steady when the control in the glove box is set to OFF, which means the passenger's front airbag is deactivated. In this setting you can fit a rear-facing child seat.

What to do:

  • To activate the passenger's front airbag, set the control in the glove box to ON.
  • With the airbag activated, do not fit a child seat in the rear-facing position.

Service

Service warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the Service lamp. It comes on steady in two situations.

If it comes on together with another warning lamp, major faults have occurred.

If it comes on with a message on the screen (where a display screen is fitted), there is a fault that has no warning lamp of its own.

What to do:

If it is on with another warning lamp:

  • Read the section for that other warning lamp.
  • Then contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If it is on with a screen message:

  • Read the message to identify the fault, for example an engine oil level alert, a risk of the particle emissions filter becoming blocked (Diesel) or the Diesel fuel additive level (Diesel with particle emissions filter).
  • Refer to the matching section of your handbook.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Braking

Braking warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the braking lamp. When it stays on steady together with the ABS lamp, the electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) system has a fault.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the ABS lamp. When it stays on steady, the anti-lock braking system has a fault, but you still have normal braking.

What to do:

  • Drive carefully at reduced speed.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

Dynamic stability control (DSC/ASR)

Dynamic stability control (DSC/ASR) warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the DSC/ASR lamp. It can flash or stay on steady.

When it flashes, the DSC/ASR system is working. It is improving traction and helping to keep the car on its line if it loses grip or starts to stray from its path.

When it stays on steady, the DSC/ASR system has a fault.

What to do:

If the lamp is flashing:

  • You do not need to do anything, as the system is doing its job.

If the lamp is steady:

  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Power steering

Power steering warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the power steering lamp. When it stays on steady, the power steering has a fault.

What to do:

  • Drive carefully at reduced speed.
  • Have the power steering checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine autodiagnosis system

Engine autodiagnosis system warning lamp iconEngine autodiagnosis system warning lamp icon

This orange engine symbol warns of engine and emissions faults, and its meaning depends on how it lights up.

When the main engine symbol stays on steady, the emission control system has a fault.

When the main engine symbol flashes, the engine management system has a fault and there is a risk of destroying the catalytic converter.

When a second engine symbol stays on steady together with the SERVICE lamp, a minor engine fault has been detected.

What to do:

If the main engine symbol is steady:

  • The lamp should go off once the engine has started.
  • If it stays on, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

If the main engine symbol is flashing:

  • Have the car checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the second engine symbol is on with the SERVICE lamp:

  • Have the car checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

AdBlue® additive (Blue HDi Diesel)

AdBlue® additive (Blue HDi Diesel) warning lamp iconAdBlue® additive (Blue HDi Diesel) warning lamp iconAdBlue® additive (Blue HDi Diesel) warning lamp icon

This orange AdBlue® symbol appears on Blue HDi Diesel models and warns you about the AdBlue® level. Each time it comes on with a beep and a screen message.

When it stays on steady as you switch on the ignition, the message shows a remaining driving range between 350 miles (600 km) and 1500 miles (2400 km).

When it flashes together with the SERVICE lamp and the message shows the remaining range, you have between 0 and 375 miles (600 km) left.

When it flashes together with the SERVICE lamp and the message says starting is prevented, the AdBlue® tank is empty and the legally required starting inhibition system stops the engine from starting.

What to do:

If the lamp is steady:

  • Have the AdBlue® tank topped up as soon as possible, either by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, or by yourself using the AdBlue® section of your handbook.

If the lamp is flashing and shows the remaining range:

  • Top up the AdBlue® tank to avoid a breakdown, either at a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, or by yourself using the AdBlue® section of your handbook.

If the lamp is flashing and starting is prevented:

  • Top up the AdBlue® tank before you can start the engine, either at a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, or by yourself using the AdBlue® section of your handbook.
  • Make sure you add at least 3.8 litres of AdBlue® to the tank.

SCR emissions control system (Blue HDi Diesel)

SCR emissions control system (Blue HDi Diesel) warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the SCR emissions control lamp on Blue HDi Diesel models. It comes on as you switch on the ignition, together with the SERVICE and engine diagnostic lamps, a beep and a screen message.

When it stays on steady with a message about an emissions control fault, a fault has been detected in the SCR emissions control system.

When it flashes with a message showing the remaining range, you have between 0 and 650 miles (1 100 km) left.

When it flashes with a message saying starting is prevented, you have gone past the authorised driving limit and the starting inhibition system stops the engine from starting.

What to do:

If the lamp is steady:

  • The alert goes away once the exhaust emissions are back to normal levels.

If the lamp is flashing and shows the remaining range:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

If the lamp is flashing and starting is prevented:

  • Call a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, as they are needed before the engine can be started.

Under-inflation

Under-inflation warning lamp iconUnder-inflation warning lamp iconUnder-inflation warning lamp icon

This orange tyre symbol relates to the tyre pressure monitoring system.

When the under-inflation symbol stays on steady, the pressure in one or more tyres is too low.

When a tyre symbol flashes and then stays on, together with the Service lamp, the tyre pressure monitoring system has a fault or a sensor has not been detected on one of the wheels. In this case the system can no longer reliably warn you of low pressure.

What to do:

If the under-inflation symbol is steady:

  • Check your tyre pressures as soon as possible.
  • Ideally, check them when the tyres are cold.

If the symbol flashes then stays on with the Service lamp:

  • Have the tyre pressure monitoring system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Airbags

Airbags warning lamp icon

This orange symbol is the airbag lamp.

It comes on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and then goes off.

If it stays on steady, one of the airbag or seat belt pretensioner systems has a fault.

What to do:

When you switch on the ignition:

  • The lamp should go off once the engine has started.
  • If it stays on, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on steady:

  • Have the airbag and seat belt pretensioner systems checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If You're Not Sure

If an orange lamp comes on and you are not sure what it means, stay calm and read the message on the screen first, as it will usually tell you which system is affected. If you are still unsure or anything feels wrong with the car, stop somewhere safe and contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Orange lamps on your Peugeot 2008 are there to let you know something needs your attention, whether that is a simple reminder or a fault to have checked. Use this guide alongside your handbook, and keep it handy so you know what to do the next time a lamp appears.
