Please note: this overview is based on the second-generation Peugeot 5008 (2017 to 2024, facelifted in 2020) and 2024 data. An all-new 5008 has since arrived, so this is most relevant for nearly-new and used buyers.
If you need seven seats but don't want to drive a minivan, the 5008 is one of the most stylish ways to do it. It's essentially a stretched 3008 with a third row of seats, a bigger boot and a more upright, square-backed tail. That makes it a natural alternative to the Skoda Kodiaq, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan X-Trail. Here's what it's like to live with.

The second-generation 5008, codenamed P87, arrived in 2017 and was facelifted in 2020, bringing it visually very close to the 3008. Up front, the upright grille has a distinctive dotted pattern, framed by LED headlights that blend neatly into it with a crystal-like finish. Full LED headlights with static cornering lights were available on higher trims, and the LED daytime running lights have the indicators built in.
Chrome trim around the windows and along the lower doors breaks up the long flanks. At the back, the claw-design full-LED tail lights sit within a gloss-black band with smoked lenses and flowing indicators, giving a 3D effect at night. One small disappointment: the "exhaust outlets" in the rear bumper are fake trim pieces, not real tailpipes.
The cabin has a relaxed, Scandinavian-living-room feel thanks to fabric-covered surfaces, combined with soft-touch materials and the high-mounted digital instrument display of Peugeot's i-Cockpit. The small steering wheel is here too. Brown stitching and chrome detailing tie the dashboard and doors together nicely.
Upholstery depends on trim. On Allure models your only choice is Colyn part-leather, which is still very smart. GT models get leather and Alcantara, and Mistral black Nappa leather is a lovely option. Upper trims add massaging, heated AGR-approved front seats: the driver gets 8-way electric adjustment with memory and adjustable lumbar support, and the passenger seat has electric lumbar and recline adjustment, an adjustable thigh support and massage too.
Other family-friendly touches include fold-down tables on the backs of the front seats, LED-lit cupholders, a two-tier centre armrest and a front passenger seat that folds flat for long loads.
This is the 5008's reason for being. The second row has three individual seats that can be adjusted independently, giving lots of flexibility. The two third-row seats fold into the floor when not needed and can be removed completely. Be realistic about them, though: they're best suited to children or shorter journeys, as adults will find them tight.
With the third row folded you get a huge 780 litres of boot space, among the best in the class, rising to 1,940 litres at maximum. Even with all seven seats in use, there's about 20 cm of load space behind the third row for a few bags. The boot opening is large, the floor is flat and there are hooks in the corners to secure items.
Higher trims add a hands-free powered tailgate that opens when you sweep your foot under the bumper.

Earlier on, a more powerful 180 hp version was offered, and frankly that's the output this big car deserves. With either of the current 130-136 hp engines, the 5008 is perfectly adequate for family duties but never quick, particularly when fully loaded. Expect average fuel consumption of roughly 5.5 to 7.5 l/100 km, depending on the engine and how you drive.
The 5008 earned five stars from Euro NCAP in 2016, tested together with the closely related 3008.
Its emergency braking can detect pedestrians and cyclists by day and night. Because rear visibility is limited by the long body, parking sensors are standard, and the front of the car carries six sensors plus a front-view camera on some versions. Other safety equipment includes:
Multimedia: an 8-inch touchscreen or 10-inch screen with 3D navigation and voice control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, two USB ports for rear passengers, three 12V sockets and an optional 515-watt, 10-speaker Focal hi-fi.
Driver tech: a 12.3-inch digital instrument display (with an Onyx-style option), an electric parking brake, keyless entry and start, front and rear parking sensors, a front camera with surround view and automatic parking.
Comfort: dual-zone climate control, rain and light sensors with follow-me-home lighting, an auto-dimming mirror (frameless on some trims), a panoramic opening sunroof with electric blind, power-folding mirrors with LED puddle lights and blue ambient lighting.
Exterior: 18-inch "Los Angeles" or 19-inch "San Francisco" alloys, a Black Diamond gloss-black roof, tinted rear windows, roof bars, chrome trim and protective body cladding.
Buy it if you need occasional seven-seat capability, a huge boot and a cabin that feels more upmarket than most rivals.
Think again if you regularly carry adults in the third row, want strong performance (the 180 hp version is no longer offered in many markets) or need excellent rear visibility.
The second-generation Peugeot 5008 is a comfortable, well-equipped and genuinely practical family SUV that looks good too. If you don't need lots of power, it's an easy recommendation, especially as a used buy.
