Peugeot 4008 I Indicators: Red Warnings (2011-present)

Red warning lamps on the Peugeot 4008 explained: parking brake, brake fluid, EBFD, battery charge and seat belt, with what each means and what to do.

When a red warning lamp comes on while the engine is running or you are driving, it is telling you about a malfunction that needs action from you. Some lamps also come on with an audible signal or a message on the instrument panel screen to help you identify the problem.

This guide covers the first-generation Peugeot 4008 and is based on handbook edition ed01-16, which applies to vehicles produced from 03/10/2016. Some lamps depend on the version or equipment of your car, so you may not see every one listed here.

Parking brake / Brake fluid level / Electronic brake force distribution

This red lamp covers the braking system and can light up for several different reasons.

It comes on steadily for a few seconds when you switch the ignition to "ON", then goes off. If it lights up at other times, it means the parking brake is on or not fully released, the brake fluid level is too low, or the electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) is faulty.

What to do:

If it comes on for a few seconds when you switch the ignition on:

  • This is part of the normal check when you switch on. The lamp should then go off.

If the parking brake is on or not fully released:

  • A message will appear with the lamp.
  • Release the parking brake fully and the lamp will go off.

If the brake fluid level is too low:

  • A message will appear with the lamp.
  • Top up the brake fluid.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the EBFD is faulty:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Battery charge*

This red lamp relates to the battery charging system.

When it stays on steadily, there is a fault in the battery charging circuit. This could be caused by dirty or loose battery terminals, or a slack or cut alternator belt, for example.

What to do:

  • The lamp should go off once you start the engine.
  • If it does not go off, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Front seat belt not fastened / unfastened

This red lamp is the driver's seat belt reminder.

It comes on steadily, then starts flashing with an audible signal, when you have not fastened your seat belt or have unfastened it.

What to do:

  • Pull the seat belt strap across you.
  • Push the tongue into the buckle until it is secure.

If You're Not Sure

If a red lamp stays on and you are not sure what it means, stay calm, stop somewhere safe and check any message on the instrument panel screen. If you have any problems, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
