How to use the speed limiter, cruise control and memorised speeds on the Peugeot 208 I, with controls, settings and safety notes from the handbook.

Your Peugeot 208 can help you keep to a chosen speed in two ways. The speed limiter stops the car from going faster than a speed you set, and cruise control holds a set speed without you using the accelerator. You can also store your favourite speed settings so they are ready when you need them.

Speed limiter LIMIT

The speed limiter stops your 208 from going faster than the speed you have programmed. You can set it with the engine running, either stationary or while driving. The minimum speed setting is 20 mph (30 km/h).

Scroll the table sideways.

ControlFunction
1Speed limiter mode selection / off
2Increases the set value
3Decreases the set value
4Speed limiter On / Pause
  1. Select the mode: turn the thumbwheel to the "LIMIT" position. Speed limiter mode is now selected but not switched on (PAUSE).
  2. Set a higher speed: press the SET + button. A short press raises the setting by 1 mph (km/h), and pressing and holding raises it in steps of 5 mph (km/h).
  3. Set a lower speed: press the SET - button. A short press lowers the setting by 1 mph (km/h), and pressing and holding lowers it in steps of 5 mph (km/h).
  4. Switch it on: press the On/Pause button once. Press it a second time to pause the limiter.
  5. Switch it off: turn the thumbwheel to the 0 position or switch off the ignition. The last speed registered stays in memory.

You can register a speed without switching the limiter on, but the engine must be running. When the car reaches the set speed, you will feel resistance in the accelerator pedal.

Going past the set speed: pressing the accelerator has no effect unless you press it firmly past the point of resistance to the floor. The limiter is then deactivated temporarily, and the set speed flashes with an audible signal. To return to normal operation, ease off the accelerator gradually and drop below the set speed.

The set speed flashes:

  • after you press the accelerator past the point of resistance,
  • when the limiter cannot stop the car speeding up because of the road profile or on a steep downhill,
  • under sharp acceleration.

Malfunction: the registered speed is erased and replaced by three dashes. Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Safety: the speed limiter never replaces the need to keep to speed limits or to stay alert. Always watch the road profile, take care when accelerating sharply and stay in full control of your car. To stop anything jamming under the pedals, make sure the floor mat is positioned and secured correctly, and never fit one mat on top of another.

Cruise control CRUISE

Cruise control keeps your 208 at the speed you have programmed, without you pressing the accelerator. It is meant for use when traffic is flowing, and it holds the speed except on a steep gradient.

Scroll the table sideways.

ControlFunction
1Cruise control mode selection / off
2Increase the programmed value
3Decrease the programmed value
4Stop / Resume cruise control

To programme or activate cruise control, your car must meet these conditions:

Scroll the table sideways.

GearboxConditions
ManualSpeed above 25 mph (40 km/h) with 4th gear or higher engaged
AutomaticSpeed above 25 mph (40 km/h) with 2nd gear or higher engaged in manual mode, or position D selected
  1. Select the mode: turn the thumbwheel to the "CRUISE" position. Cruise control mode is now selected but not switched on (PAUSE).
  2. Reach your speed: press the accelerator until the car reaches the speed you want.
  3. Register the speed: press the SET - or SET + button. The car now holds this speed.
  4. Pause: press the Stop/Resume button, or press the brake or clutch pedal (depending on version).
  5. Resume: press the Stop/Resume button. The car returns to the last registered speed. You can also repeat the steps for registering a speed.
  6. Switch it off: turn the thumbwheel to the "0" position. The display returns to the total mileage recorder.

With 1.2 PureTech 82 and 110 (Euro 6.2) or 1.5 BlueHDi (Euro 6.2) engines with a manual gearbox and Stop & Start, pressing the clutch pedal does not pause the cruise control. It stays active after you change gear.

Overtaking: you can accelerate and drive above the set speed for a while. The programmed value flashes, and when you release the accelerator the car returns to the set speed.

Changing the set speed: to go higher without the accelerator, press SET +. A short press raises the setting by 1 mph (km/h), and pressing and holding raises it in steps of 5 mph (km/h). Or drive above the registered speed until you reach the speed you want, then press SET + or SET -. To go lower, press SET -: a short press lowers it by 1 mph (km/h), and pressing and holding lowers it in steps of 5 mph (km/h). Take care when holding the button, as the speed can rise or fall quickly.

When you switch off the ignition, all registered speed settings are lost. If there is a malfunction, the registered speed is erased and replaced by three dashes: have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Safety: do not use cruise control on slippery roads or in heavy traffic. On a steep descent, it cannot stop the car going faster than the set speed. It never replaces the need to keep to speed limits or to stay alert. To stop the pedals jamming, make sure the floor mat is positioned and secured correctly, and never fit one mat on top of another.

Memorising speeds

You can store speed settings for the speed limiter and for cruise control, up to five for each system. Some speed settings are already stored by default.

To set them up on the touch screen, open the Driving/Vehicle menu. For safety, only do this when your car is stationary.

  1. Open the tab: select the "Driving functions" tab.
  2. Choose the function: select "Adjusting speeds".
  3. Activate it: press "ON".
  4. Pick your speeds: tick the speed settings 1 to 5 that you want to use.
  5. Choose one to change: select the speed setting value you want to change.
  6. Enter the new value: type it on the numerical keypad and press "OK" to confirm.

To use a stored speed while driving:

  1. Find the nearest speed: press and hold the "+" or "-" button. The system stops at the nearest stored speed.
  2. Move to another: press and hold the "+" or "-" button again to select another stored speed.

The instrument panel shows the speed and whether the system is on or off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I go faster than the speed limiter setting on my Peugeot 208?

Press the accelerator firmly past the point of resistance to the floor. The limiter switches off temporarily and the set speed flashes with an audible signal until you drop back below it.

What is the minimum speed for cruise control on a Peugeot 208?

Your car must be going faster than 25 mph (40 km/h). With a manual gearbox you also need 4th gear or higher, and with an automatic you need 2nd gear or higher in manual mode, or position D.

Why does my Peugeot 208 cruise control not cancel when I press the clutch?

On 1.2 PureTech 82 and 110 (Euro 6.2) or 1.5 BlueHDi (Euro 6.2) engines with a manual gearbox and Stop & Start, the clutch pedal does not pause cruise control. Use the Stop/Resume button or the brake pedal instead.

Why are there three dashes instead of a speed on my 208 display?

Three dashes in place of the registered speed mean the speed limiter or cruise control has a malfunction. Have it checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

The speed limiter and cruise control make longer journeys easier on your Peugeot 208, but they never replace your own attention to the road. Keep this guide handy, and check the handbook if you are unsure how a control works on your version.
