Peugeot 508 I Indicators: Orange Warnings (2014-present)

What every orange warning light on the Peugeot 508 I means, from Service and engine faults to AdBlue and tyre pressure, and what you should do next.

Orange lamps on your dashboard either warn you about a fault that needs your attention or confirm that a system is running or has been deliberately switched off. Some come on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and should go off once the engine starts. If one stays on, check what it means before you move off. A lamp may stay steady or flash, and it may come with a beep or a message on the display, so read any message that appears.

This guide covers the orange warning and indicator lamps on the Peugeot 508 I (2014-present), based on handbook edition ed01-17 for vehicles produced from 01/03/2017. Some lamps depend on your version or equipment, so you may not see all of them on your car.

Service

Service warning lamp icon

This is the general Service warning lamp. It comes on when the car detects a fault that has no warning lamp of its own. If it comes on only for a while, the fault is minor. If it stays on, the fault is major.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on for a while and then goes off:

  • Read the message on the display to find out what the fault is.
  • If the message relates to the particle filter, see the particle filter section of your handbook.
  • For any other fault, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on:

  • Read the message on the display to identify the fault.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine self-diagnostic system

Engine self-diagnostic system warning lamp icon

This is the engine self-diagnostic warning lamp. If it flashes, the engine management system has a fault and the catalytic converter could be destroyed. If it stays on, the emission control system has a fault.

What to do:

If the lamp is flashing:

  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, as the catalytic converter is at risk.

If the lamp stays on:

  • The lamp should go off once you start the engine.
  • If it does not go off, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

Diesel engine pre-heating

Diesel engine pre-heating warning lamp icon

This is the diesel pre-heating lamp. It stays on after you turn the ignition to the second position (ignition on) or press the START/STOP button. How long it stays on depends on the weather, and in extreme conditions it can be up to about thirty seconds.

What to do:

  • Wait until the lamp goes off before you start the engine. The engine will then start straight away, as long as you keep the clutch pedal pressed with a manual gearbox, or the brake pedal pressed with an automatic gearbox.
  • If the engine does not start, switch the ignition off and back on, wait for the lamp to go off again, then start the engine.

Deactivation of the automatic functions of the electric parking brake

Deactivation of the automatic functions of the electric parking brake warning lamp icon

This lamp relates to the electric parking brake. When it stays on, the automatic application (when you switch off the engine) and automatic release (when you accelerate) functions are switched off.

What to do:

  • To switch these functions back on, or for more information, see the electric parking brake section of your handbook.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning lamp icon

This is the ABS warning lamp. When it stays on, the anti-lock braking system has a fault. Your car still has conventional braking.

What to do:

  • Drive carefully and at a reduced speed.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

Dynamic stability control (DSC/ASR)

Dynamic stability control (DSC/ASR) warning lamp iconDynamic stability control (DSC/ASR) warning lamp icon

DSC is dynamic stability control and ASR is anti-slip regulation. The DSC/ASR lamp flashes when the system is working and stays on if the system has a fault.

A separate DSC/ASR off indicator lamp comes on when you press the button to switch the system off.

What to do:

If the DSC/ASR lamp is flashing:

  • The system is improving traction and helping keep the car stable and on course where grip or trajectory has been lost.

If the DSC/ASR lamp stays on:

  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the DSC/ASR off indicator lamp is on:

  • Press the button to switch DSC/ASR back on. The indicator lamp will go off.
  • The system switches on automatically when you start the car, and switches itself back on once you reach around 30 mph (50 km/h).
  • For more information, see the Electronic stability control (ESC) section of your handbook.

Airbags

Airbags warning lamp icon

This is the airbag warning lamp. It comes on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and then goes off. If it stays on, one of the airbag or seat belt pyrotechnic pretensioner systems has a fault.

What to do:

When you switch on the ignition:

  • The lamp should go off once you start the engine.
  • If it does not go off, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on:

  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Passenger airbag system

Passenger airbag system warning lamp icon

This lamp shows on the instrument panel and/or the front passenger airbag and seat belt warning lamp display. It stays on when the control switch in the glove box is set to OFF, which means the front passenger airbag is switched off. You can then fit a rearward-facing child seat on that seat, unless the airbag warning lamp is on to show an airbag fault.

What to do:

  • To switch the front passenger airbag back on, set the switch in the glove box to ON.
  • With the airbag switched on, do not fit a rearward-facing child seat on the front passenger seat.

Under-inflation

Under-inflation warning lamp iconUnder-inflation warning lamp iconUnder-inflation warning lamp icon

If the under-inflation lamp stays on, the pressure in one or more of your tyres is too low.

If the tyre pressure monitoring lamp flashes and then stays on, together with the Service warning lamp, the tyre pressure monitoring system has a fault or a wheel sensor has not been detected. Low tyre pressure may then go undetected.

What to do:

If the under-inflation lamp stays on:

  • Check your tyre pressures as soon as you can.
  • Ideally, check them when the tyres are cold.

If the lamp flashes and then stays on with the Service warning lamp:

  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

AdBlue® (BlueHDi Diesel)

AdBlue® (BlueHDi Diesel) warning lamp iconAdBlue® (BlueHDi Diesel) warning lamp icon

This is the AdBlue® lamp on BlueHDi diesel models. It comes with a beep and a message on the display.

If it stays on when you switch on the ignition, and the message shows your remaining range, you have between 375 miles (600 km) and 1,500 miles (2,400 km) left.

If it flashes together with the Service warning lamp, and the message shows your remaining range, you have between 0 and 375 miles (0 and 600 km) left.

If it flashes together with the Service warning lamp and the message says starting is prevented, the AdBlue® tank is empty. The starting inhibition system required by law will stop the engine from starting.

What to do:

If the lamp stays on, with between 375 and 1,500 miles of range left:

  • Have the AdBlue® tank topped up as soon as you can, either at a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, or by doing it yourself.

If the lamp flashes, with between 0 and 375 miles of range left:

  • You must top up the AdBlue® tank to avoid a breakdown, either at a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, or by doing it yourself.

If the lamp flashes and starting is prevented:

  • Top up the AdBlue® tank so you can start the engine, either at a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, or by doing it yourself.
  • You must add at least 4 litres of AdBlue® to the tank.

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi Diesel)

SCR emissions control system (BlueHDi Diesel) warning lamp iconSCR emissions control system (BlueHDi Diesel) warning lamp iconSCR emissions control system (BlueHDi Diesel) warning lamp icon

On BlueHDi diesel models, this lamp comes on when you switch on the ignition, together with the Service and engine diagnostic warning lamps, a beep and a message.

If it stays on, a fault has been detected in the SCR emissions control system.

If it flashes and the message shows your remaining range, the fault has been confirmed. You can drive for up to 685 miles (1,100 km) before the starting inhibition system kicks in.

If it flashes after you have gone past that limit, the starting inhibition system will stop the engine from starting.

What to do:

If the lamp stays on:

  • The alert will clear once exhaust emissions are back to normal.

If the lamp flashes and shows your remaining range:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay to avoid a breakdown.

If the lamp flashes and the engine will not start:

  • Call a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop so the engine can be started again.

Rear foglamps

Rear foglamps warning lamp icon

This is the rear foglamp indicator. It stays on while the rear foglamps are on, after you switch them on with the ring on the lighting control stalk.

What to do:

  • To switch the rear foglamps off, turn the ring on the lighting control stalk backwards.

If You're Not Sure

If an orange lamp comes on and you are not sure what it means, read any message on the display, as it will help you find the cause. If it still is not clear, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop for advice.

Most orange lamps are not an emergency, but they do need your attention. Act on them promptly and, if in doubt, have your Peugeot 508 checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
