Peugeot 406 Coupe Indicators: Green and Blue Warnings (2003-2004)

Peugeot 406 Coupe (2003-2004) green and blue indicator lights explained: the ASR/ESP stability light and the diesel pre-heating light, plus what to do.

Green and blue lamps on your instrument panel are usually there to tell you something rather than warn you about a fault: they show that a system is working, switched on or switched off. Some of them still ask you to do something, such as waiting before you start the engine.

This guide covers the Peugeot 406 Coupe, based on handbook edition 01-04, which applies to cars produced from 1 January 2004. The handbook text does not print the colour of each lamp, so check the light on your own panel. Some lamps depend on the version, engine or equipment of your car, so you may not see all of them.

ASR/ESP Stability indicator light

ASR/ESP Stability indicator light warning lamp icon

This is the ASR/ESP stability symbol on your instrument panel. It comes on for a few seconds each time you switch the ignition on. With the engine running and the car moving, it flashes when the system is working, and it stays lit continuously when you have switched the system off.

What to do:

If it flashes while you are driving:

  • The ASR/ESP system is working to keep the car stable.

If it stays lit after you have switched the system off:

  • This simply confirms the ASR/ESP system is switched off.

If it stays on, or comes on while the engine is running, without you switching the system off:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

Pre-heating indicator light (Diesel engine)

This is the pre-heating symbol, fitted to diesel models. If the engine is already warm enough, the light will not come on and you can start the engine straight away.

What to do:

If the light comes on:

  • Wait until it goes out before you use the starter.

If the light does not come on:

  • You can start the engine without waiting.

If You're Not Sure

If a lamp comes on and you are not sure what it means, stay calm, stop somewhere safe when you can and check your Peugeot 406 Coupe handbook. If the light points to a fault, contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

Green and blue lamps are mostly there to keep you informed, so getting to know them makes it easier to spot when something has changed. Keep an eye on your instrument panel each time you switch the ignition on, and you will soon know what is normal for your car.
