Peugeot 406 Break Indicators: Green and Blue Warnings (2002)

What the green and blue indicator lights on your Peugeot 406 Break (2002) mean, from ESP to diesel pre-heating, and what to do when you see them.

Green and blue lamps on your dashboard are generally there to tell you that a system is working or switched on, rather than to warn you of a problem. Some of them can still point to a fault in certain cases, so it is worth knowing how each one behaves.

This guide covers the Peugeot 406 Break, based on handbook edition ed02-02, which applies to cars produced from 01/07/2002. The handbook does not show the colour of each lamp, so check against your own instrument panel. Some lamps depend on the version or equipment fitted to your car.

ESP Electronic Stability Programme operation indicator light

This is the indicator for the ESP (Electronic Stability Programme). It flashes while the system is operating. If it stays on continuously, the ESP has either been switched off or has a fault.

What to do:

If the light is flashing:

  • The ESP is working, so no action is needed.

If the light stays on continuously:

  • Check whether you have switched the ESP off yourself.
  • If you haven't, the light may be telling you there is a fault with the system.

Diesel pre-heating indicator light

This is the pre-heating indicator on diesel versions. It tells you whether you need to wait before starting the engine.

What to do:

If the light does not come on:

  • The engine is warm enough, so you can start it straight away without waiting.

If the light comes on:

  • Wait until the light goes out before you use the starter.

Passenger air bag disarming warning light

This lamp shows the status of the front passenger air bag. When it lights up, you will also hear an audible signal and see a message on the multifunction display.

What to do:

If the light comes on when you switch on the ignition and stays on:

  • This is a reminder that the passenger air bag is disarmed.

If the light flashes:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

If You're Not Sure

If you are not sure what a lamp is telling you, check your handbook and look at how the light behaves, whether it flashes or stays on. If it's a safety lamp and you are unsure, stop somewhere safe and contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

Green and blue lamps are mostly there to keep you informed, but knowing what each one means helps you spot the few times they need your attention. Keep this guide handy for your Peugeot 406 Break.
