Peugeot 207 I Indicators: Orange Warnings (2005-present)

What each orange warning light on the Peugeot 207 means and what you should do, from engine and ABS faults to low fuel, based on the 2011 handbook.

Orange (amber) lamps on your Peugeot 207 tell you that a system has been switched on or off, or that something needs your attention. Some only confirm what you have selected. Others warn of a fault that you should have looked at. Certain lamps come on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and should go off once the engine starts. If one stays on, check what it means before you move off.

This guide covers the first-generation Peugeot 207 (2005-present) and is based on handbook edition ed01-11, which applies to cars produced from 1 March 2011. It applies to petrol and Diesel models with manual or automatic gearboxes. Some lamps only appear on certain versions or with certain equipment, so your car may not show every one listed here.

Rear foglamps

Rear foglamps warning lamp icon

This is the rear foglamp symbol. It stays on steadily to show that your rear foglamps are switched on.

What to do:

  • When you no longer need them, turn the ring on the lighting stalk rearwards to switch off the rear foglamps.

Diesel engine pre-heating

Diesel engine pre-heating warning lamp icon

This is the Diesel pre-heating symbol. It stays on steadily when the ignition key is at the second position (ignition on), showing that the engine is pre-heating.

What to do:

  • Wait until the lamp goes off before you start the engine.
  • How long it stays on depends on the weather conditions.

Passenger's airbag system

Passenger's airbag system warning lamp icon

This is the passenger airbag deactivation symbol. It stays on steadily when the airbag control in the glove box is set to OFF, which means the passenger's front airbag is switched off. In this setting you can fit a rear-facing child seat in the front passenger seat.

What to do:

  • To switch the passenger's front airbag back on, set the control in the glove box to ON.
  • With the airbag switched on, never fit a rear-facing child seat in the front passenger seat.

ESP/ASR

ESP/ASR warning lamp icon

This is the ESP/ASR off symbol. It stays on steadily, together with the indicator lamp on the button in the centre of the dashboard, when you have pressed that button to switch off the ESP/ASR. ESP is the electronic stability programme and ASR is the anti-skid regulation.

What to do:

  • Press the button again to switch the ESP/ASR back on. Its indicator lamp goes off.
  • The system also switches itself back on from about 30 mph (50 km/h), and every time you start the car.

Service

Service warning lamp icon

This is the service warning symbol. It is used for problems that do not have their own warning lamp. If it comes on for a short time, a minor problem has been detected. If it stays on steadily, a major problem has been detected.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on temporarily:

  • Read the message on the screen to find out what the problem is, for example the engine oil level, the screenwash level, the remote control battery or, on Diesel cars, a saturated particle emissions filter (see the particle emissions filter part of the Checks section in your handbook).
  • For any other fault, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on steadily:

  • Read the message on the screen to identify the problem.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Braking

Braking warning lamp icon

This is the braking warning symbol. When it stays on steadily together with the STOP and ABS warning lamps, the electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) system has a fault.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning lamp icon

This is the ABS symbol. If it stays on steadily, the anti-lock braking system has a fault. Your car still has conventional braking, but without the anti-lock function.

What to do:

  • Drive carefully and at reduced speed.
  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

Dynamic stability control (ESP/ASR)

Dynamic stability control (ESP/ASR) warning lamp icon

This is the ESP/ASR symbol. When it flashes, the system is actively working to improve traction and keep the car stable. When it stays on steadily and you have not switched the system off (button pressed and its indicator lamp on), the ESP/ASR has a fault.

What to do:

If the lamp is flashing:

  • No action is needed. The system is helping your car's grip and directional stability.

If the lamp stays on steadily:

  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Engine autodiagnosis system

Engine autodiagnosis system warning lamp icon

This is the engine warning symbol. If it stays on steadily, the emission control system has a fault. If it flashes, the engine management system has a fault and there is a risk of destroying the catalytic converter.

What to do:

If the lamp stays on steadily:

  • The lamp should go off once the engine has started.
  • If it does not go off, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

If the lamp is flashing:

  • Have the car checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop, as the catalytic converter could be destroyed.

Low fuel level

Low fuel level warning lamp icon

This is the fuel pump symbol. When it first comes on steadily, there are about 5 litres of fuel left in the tank. It will come on every time you switch on the ignition until you add enough fuel.

What to do:

  • Refuel as soon as possible so you do not run out. The tank holds about 50 litres (petrol) or 48 litres (Diesel).
  • Never keep driving until the tank is empty, as this could damage the emission control and injection systems.

Maximum coolant temperature

Maximum coolant temperature warning lamp icon

This is the coolant temperature symbol. The handbook describes it coming on steadily in red, meaning the temperature of the cooling system is too high.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Wait until the engine has cooled down, then top up the coolant if needed.
  • If the problem continues, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Door(s) open

This is the open door symbol. It stays on steadily, when you are travelling at less than 6 mph (10 km/h), to show that a door or the boot is still open.

What to do:

  • Close the door or boot properly.

Airbags

Airbags warning lamp icon

This is the airbag symbol. It comes on for a few seconds when you switch on the ignition and then goes off, which is normal. If it stays on steadily, one of the airbag or seat belt pretensioner systems has a fault.

What to do:

If the lamp comes on temporarily:

  • The lamp should go off once the engine has started.
  • If it does not go off, contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the lamp stays on steadily:

  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Power steering

Power steering warning lamp icon

This is the steering wheel warning symbol. If it stays on steadily, the power steering has a fault.

What to do:

  • Drive carefully and at reduced speed.
  • Have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Water in Diesel

Water in Diesel warning lamp icon

This is the water in Diesel symbol. If it stays on steadily, there is water in the Diesel fuel filter, which risks damaging the injection system on Diesel engines.

What to do:

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

If You're Not Sure

If a lamp comes on and you cannot tell what it means, check whether it is steady or flashing and read any message on the screen, as both help explain what the car is telling you. If you are still not sure, or a lamp stays on after the engine has started, stop somewhere safe when you can and contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Most orange lamps on your Peugeot 207 either confirm a setting you have chosen or warn you early about a fault, so it pays to know them before you need them. Keep this guide handy, and always use your own handbook as the final word for your exact version.
