Peugeot 407 Coupe Indicators: Red Warnings (2005-2011)

Red warning lights on the Peugeot 407 Coupe explained: what each lamp means and what to do, from the braking system and STOP lamps to oil pressure.

Red warning lamps on your instrument panel point to something that needs your attention straight away. Some ask you to stop as soon as it is safe to do so, while others simply tell you that something has not been done, such as a seat belt left unfastened.

This guide covers the red lamps on the Peugeot 407 Coupe (2005-2011), based on handbook edition ed01-10 for vehicles produced from 1 August 2010. Some lamps are only fitted according to version or equipment, so you may not see every one on your car.

Braking system warning lamp

Braking system warning lamp warning lamp icon

This is the red braking system lamp on your instrument panel. It can come on for three reasons: the parking brake is applied or has not been released correctly, the brake fluid level has dropped too far, or there is a fault with the electronic brake force distribution (EBFD). In the last two cases, the STOP warning lamp comes on with it and the lamp is also repeated in the instrument panel screen.

What to do:

If the parking brake is applied or has not been released correctly:

  • The lamp is showing you the state of the parking brake.

If the brake fluid level has dropped too far or there is an EBFD fault (the STOP lamp is also on):

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Seat belt warning lamp

STOP warning lamp

This is the red STOP lamp on your instrument panel. It never comes on by itself: it lights up together with the engine oil pressure, coolant temperature, power steering, braking system or punctured tyre warning lamp.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Low coolant level warning lamp (according to version)

This is the red low coolant level lamp, fitted according to version. It tells you that the coolant level in the cooling system is too low. Take care: the cooling system is under pressure.

What to do:

  • Stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

If you are topping up the coolant:

  • Wait for the engine to cool down first.
  • Unscrew the cap by two turns to let the pressure drop and avoid any risk of scalding.
  • Once the pressure has dropped, remove the cap and top up with coolant.

What to do:

  • The handbook gives no specific instruction here: the lamp and the multifunction screen show you which opening has not been closed correctly.

Engine oil pressure warning lamp

What to do:

  • If it comes on while the engine is running, stop immediately.

  • Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.

If You're Not Sure

If a red lamp comes on and you are not sure what it means, stay calm, stop somewhere safe and check your handbook. If the STOP lamp is lit as well, do not carry on driving, and consult a PEUGEOT dealer.
