Peugeot 3008 Engine and Performance Review
Peugeot 3008 petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid engines compared using official handbook data on power, gearboxes and towing, plus a look at the new 3008.

Ask any 3008 owner which engine they have and you'll get a wide range of answers. Over the second-generation car's life (2016-2023) Peugeot sold everything from a 1.2-litre three-cylinder to a 300 hp four-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid. This guide focuses on the petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid engines most buyers chose. The plug-ins have their own guide: Peugeot 3008 plug-in hybrid engine review.
Second-Generation 3008 (2016-2023): Official Engine Data
The 3008 and 5008 share an owner's handbook. These are the 3008 figures from the English Peugeot 3008/5008 owner's handbook:

| Engine | Gearbox | Capacity | Max power (EC) | Braked trailer | Unbraked trailer | Nose weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PureTech 130 S&S | 6-speed manual | 1,199 cc | 96 kW | 1,400 kg | 690 kg | 80 kg |
| PureTech 130 S&S | EAT8 automatic | 1,199 cc | 96 kW | 1,150 kg | 690 kg | 80 kg |
| BlueHDi 130 S&S | EAT8 automatic | 1,499 cc | 96 kW | 1,300 kg | 750 kg | 80 kg |
| Hybrid 136 e-DCS6 | 6-speed electric dual-clutch | 1,199 cc + 21 kW motor | 100 kW (petrol engine) | 1,250 kg | 750 kg | 70 kg |
| PureTech 180 S&S | EAT8 automatic | 1,598 cc | 133 kW | 1,500 kg | 750 kg | 80 kg |
| THP 150 / THP 165 | EAT6 automatic | 1,598 cc | 110 / 121.4 kW | 600 kg (most markets) | 600 kg | 80 kg |
The THP engines are older 1.6 turbo petrols found in some markets.
Choosing an Engine
PureTech 130: the default petrol
Most petrol 3008s have this turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder. It's adequate rather than quick in a car of this size, and it feels best on the EAT8 automatic. Notice the towing figures, though: the manual is rated for 1,400 kg braked, against 1,150 kg for the automatic. If you tow, that difference matters.
BlueHDi 130: the diesel workhorse
The 1.5-litre diesel produces 130 hp and 300 Nm, so it feels stronger than the petrol at low revs, especially with a full load. It's the most economical choice for regular motorway driving and can tow 1,300 kg. Expect to top up the AdBlue occasionally. Short trips aren't ideal for any modern diesel, because the particulate filter needs regular longer runs to clean itself.
PureTech 180: the quick one
The 1.6-litre PureTech 180 with the EAT8 is the fastest non-hybrid 3008 and the best petrol for towing, at 1,500 kg braked. It wasn't sold in every market.
Hybrid 136: the late-model mild hybrid
Late in the second-generation car's life, a 48-volt Hybrid 136 became available. It combines a 100 kW PureTech 136 with a 21 kW electric motor built into a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox, plus a small 0.9 kWh battery. It doesn't need plugging in. It cuts fuel use in town and makes pulling away smoother.
The Third-Generation 3008 (2024 on)
The all-new 3008, a fastback-style SUV with a large curved screen, has a very different line-up. The 01/2024 edition of the 3008 handbook lists:

| Version | Key specification |
|---|---|
| Hybrid 136 e-DCS6 | PureTech 136, 100 kW + 21 kW motor, 48 V 0.9 kWh battery; braked trailer 1,000 kg (accessory towbar) or 1,200 kg (factory towbar) |
| Plug-in Hybrid 195 e-DCS7 | PureTech 150, 110 kW + 92 kW motor, 21 kWh battery, 143 kW combined; braked trailer 1,550 kg |
| E-3008 EV 210 | 154 kW / 210 hp, 73 kWh battery |
| E-3008 EV 230 | 169 kW / 230 hp, 96.3 kWh battery |
| E-3008 EV 320 (AWD) | 235 kW / 320 hp, 74.8 kWh battery |
There's no diesel in the new 3008. The handbook also lists a PureTech 180 EAT6 petrol for certain markets. Electric versions can tow, but the limit depends on version and equipment, so check your car's own handbook and the weights on its identification plate.
Which 3008 Should You Buy?
- Used, mostly motorway miles: a second-generation BlueHDi 130 EAT8
- Used, mostly town driving, no charging: PureTech 130 EAT8, or a Hybrid 136 if your budget allows
- Towing a caravan: the PureTech 180 or the PureTech 130 manual have the highest braked limits
- Low running costs with home charging: see our 3008 plug-in hybrid guide
